Okay so let's say you have a deep pit with a bunch of snakes at the bottom and you start to fill it in by hand.

When shovelling dirt into the pit, will the snakes eventually be buried or will they just come to the top of each new dirt later so eventually they reach the top and slither free?

Even if you completely bury them, they can dig their way out. Snakes live in the ground anyway.
