It's rather expensive. Do you know why it's better than the kindle which also seems to get good reviews and is a bunch cheaper?

Get a Kindle. It's the cheapest one, and it's still the lightest, has the best battery life, the best reviews, tons of books and options, etc. It might not have as many features as the ones with backlit color screens and shit, but if you want to just read books and not much more, it does one thing and it does it well.

I don't care about color, but I assume it does have backlight? As for books, need to figure out what formats it all supports as I plan on pirating most my books.

Kindle, only because the reading surface is like natural paper and it is easier on the eyes. The Nook color looks cooler though.

It doesn't have a backlit screen, because it is e-ink. Books aren't backlit either, but you can read those fine, lol.
You can either convert from .epub or download .mobi format.
Also, plaintext and PDF work great.
but yeah, kindle is the way to go, really.

Kindle is so far superior to every other e-reader it's not funny.
e-ink provides the best readability
battery life is unparalleled

You can use a PC to do anything an e-reader can. I only use my smartphone for e-reading because the kind of places I would use an e-reader (in lines, on the bus, etc.) an e-reader would either be too unwieldy or too high profile. Sure it's a small screen, but it's portable and goes where I go.
So I'd recommend a smartphone, if you don't already have one. I use the kindle app for all my books.

Going for the kindle. Reasons for not using smartphone: Small screen, suboptimal battery life, much more relaxed to have a bigger screen with e-ink when lounging outside or wherever. Reason for not using a laptop/desktop: Heavy, big.
