Here in the UK, we cannot have guns for self defence, and are very limited as to what weapons we can have and use in self defence. Personally, I have 3 baseball bats well hidden in various places around my home. Ideally I would like to have at least one big, police strength container of pepper spray, for anyone that breaks into my home. Obviously pepper spray is completely illegal over here, in the eyes of the law, pepper spray is a firearm. You can get years in prison for having it.
So, maybe I should make my own pepper spray? All you need is one of those big "weed killer spray" container things. Add some chili powder, rubbing alcohol and water and you can spray it in someones face. But how effective is this really? I know that if you spray ammonia in someone's face it will temporarily blind them, so I am thinking about using this instead. (If I had to use it, I would dispose of the container before contacting police.)

Yeah. Apparently the decent ones (that don't break after a hard smack) cost ~$100. I'll stick with baseball bats, since I prefer them (for hitting people and for defence in court, it's pretty hard to explain away a baton).

Pepper spray itself isn't really that effective. It's just a tool to buy you a few extra seconds to run away or stop someone from hurting you seriously.

If you are really intent on making some, really hot (high capsaicin) hot sauce is a good bet. You probably want something oily that can sprayed in a fine mist. Try it out on yourself or a willing friend to gauge its effectiveness. :D
Also, a weaker form of pepper spray is often available as "animal repellent" or "dog repellent" and may be legal in your area. If you aren't actually worried about hurting someone, pretty much any caustic household cleaner (aerosol oven cleaner, bleach, etc.) would probably cause a lot of immediate pain if sprayed in someone's face.

The primary difference between the baton and a baseball bat is compactness. Since they're collapsible they're much easier to conceal and whip out, rather than say, walking down the street at night with a baseball bat. I didn't know you meant strictly for home defence.
