Topic: Why Trump's auto maker tariff plan will only hurt the US.

Indy !KUahHbg6fY started this discussion 9 years ago #58,533

The reason auto makers prefer manufacturing in Mexico to the US, is not because labor is cheap. Sure, it is, but it is not such a huge savings that it would somehow overcome all of the other expenses of moving operations to Mexico. The reason is that Mexico has free trade with most of the world, while the US has limited trade with tariffs. Auto makers who start in Mexico can sell many more autos to many more global markets. By making it even harder to do business with the US, Trump will only hurt the auto makers, and the US economy. What do you think?

Will he hurt US workers, or just US CEOs and shareholders?

Both. It will cause auto makers to leave the US for places with freer trade.

But most car manufacturers set up factories in the countries they sell to. When someone from Europe buys a Ford that car isn't imported from the US or Mexico, it's made in Europe.

I do not think that is true. For example, most Toyotas in the US are not made in the US. This is often the case. Auto makers set up factories in countries that have the lowest production costs.

Well here is a list of Toyota factories in the US
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Toyota_manufacturing_facilities#United_States
You have 6 factories in the US and do you have any source on the number of Toyota cars owned in the US and how many are imported compaired to how many are made?

The arguement on Ford and GM moving to Mexico was based on the cars being made cheaper in Mexico then transported back to the US for sale which increse profits. Trump has been stating that this can't last as he'll slap a 35% tarrif on goods coming into the US from Mexico. Ford can still build cars in Mexico and sell them to Mexicans if they wish but not drive them across the border and sell them for greater profit at the expence of American jobs.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi, Inc., (TMMMS) is located in Blue Springs. Vehicle manufacture and assembly - Corolla.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, Inc., (TMMK) is located in Georgetown. Engine manufacture - 2GR-FE and 2AR-FE. Vehicle manufacture and assembly - Camry, Hybrid Camry, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Venza, and Lexus ES.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, Inc (TMMTX) is located in San Antonio. Vehicle manufacture and assembly - Tundra & Tacoma.

If Obama did it you'd be praising it to the heavens.

Also what do you care about Ford? You don't even buy American cars.
