I also heard something about a cure for all cancers. This is insane. I'm worried it's a rubber band effect and it's gonna snap back and the world gonna fucking end or something.

Don't get too excited yet. This looks to be just overblown reporting. The researchers are working with SIV in macaques, not HIV in humans; there are important differences between the two. There is no guarantee that their approach will carry over successfully to HIV because of a wide range of genetic diversity in HIV strains. It's encouraging progress for the approach they are using, but it's still a long way to (and maybe nowhere near) a workable HIV vaccine.

Currently, Pickerâ€™s team has no plans to move the vaccine into human studies because of safety concerns about cytomegalovirus (CMV). The virus causes no harm in healthy people and is widespread, infecting nearly half of the U.S. population and more than 90% of people in sub-Saharan African and India. Still, it can hurt fetuses, leading to vision and hearing loss as well as mental retardation, and, in an ironic twist, can cause blindness in immune-deficient children and adults who have diseases like HIV infection.

The approach they are using attaches SIV genes to a harmless herpesvirus (CMV). The CMV is supposed to be a harmless way to alert the immune system to warding off SIV attacks. It turns out that the "harmless delivery vehicle" (CMV) is only harmless for people with normal immune systems. When this method is extended to humans with HIV, HIV infected individuals (the ones that will need the vaccine) are at risk from it.
