You have to wonder why these guys are smart enough to synthesize LSD, make millions upon millions of dollars, but dumb enough to stay in the game for so long. They could have retired and spent the rest of their lives partying, but lolno jail for life instead. Greed makes the smartest of people do the dumbest of things. Much like love.

I think they want the power and respect. I can kind of understand that mentality, they could even delude themselves into thinking what they do benefits society. There's also the simplest explanation - they just have expensive tastes.
