we had a talk about this on irc before when catherine had some weird fantasy about being tied to a hometrainer forced to paddle for electricity. we calculated that feeding any kind of human being enough to keep them alive would be more expensive than the electricity costs

Well if Catherine's fantasy kidnapper has more reasons to keep her alive besides the electricity, then the paddling saves money because the kidnapper would feed her anyway. So the paddling is like a way to pay back the cost of food.

If you were a top cyclist you'd generate anywhere between 350-500W. A normal AC unit can consume 3-4kW, so you'd need to 10 Tour de France top cyclist to power one AC unit.
The biggest Tesla Powerwall can store 10 kW of energy, so you'd need like, 24hours with a top-dog cyclist to fill it up.
