I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linuxâ€, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. In fact iphone is UNIX based, yet not a true pure UNIX. Close enough. So anyone who already has paid for the included O/S would be tyme wasting to install Linux on such a device. IF one could buy the iphone O/S free then yes the Linux may be one option.
IPad uses the same O/S with the most minor of changes and I have one without any changes as a beta unit that I will return in August per contract, Now how did one get the IPad touch without O/S installed? Why would one want such a device?
Soon there will be zillons for sale when people get a look at the NEW Ipad and of course connectivity which to a few could be important. Various beta peeps have various versions of O/S so frankly no one out and about at moment has a real clue re what O/S is about to become/change/or/not/
