They're the same fuckin' thing. They are both the mineral corundum, which is found in a variety of hues due to various additional elements. Crystal corundum having any of the hues other than red are called saphires, though the blue ones are most known. Anyway, inclusion of chromium ions imparts redness to the ruby.
