Conclude Ubuntu will be for 10-year-olds from now on.
Download Kubuntu 10.10, copy image to USB stick, reinstall system.
KDE's not so bad, now if only I can figure out how to keep windows from opening up all over the place.

canonical can make a modern desktop interface from scratch and single-handedly bring the world of free software to prominence
and can't make a distro that updates to new versions without breaking

For some reason, Ubuntu is entering a phase where updates that should be released to those nerds who run bleeding edge versions are being released to people who want working operating systems. Unless you get a kick out of solving compatibility and dependency problems in your spare time, float a version or two behind the latest releases. Even though your version is not the latest, it will still be maintained. You will still get all the important updates and the same programs will be generally available.
You probably wouldn't want to rely on a new, prototype engine in your car to get you to work everyday if it might break down more often. You probably wouldn't count on a potentially dangerous, experimental drug to cure an easily treatable disease just because it promised it could do it more quickly. Leave that to the crazy and desperate. If you want to help develop the latest version and you have some time, then great. If you want a reliable system to use daily, then you may have to go without the latest shiny that someone is trying to crowbar into the GUI this month.

this. 10.10 is in LTS and will be fully supported for the next few years
