i agree with green. alt-left is a new buzzword. "the media" is i think trying to popularize the term neoliberal, which is not something i've heard before, and to cast the establishment democrats as being "neoliberals," but i'm not exactly sure what the distinction is. it may only be referring to hawkish democrats and not mean anything else like neo-conservative which, i believe, means militarily hawkish and economically liberal. big spending republicans i guess. maybe neoliberal also includes the social PC side of the left wing. idk.
but there's no organized fringe liberal alt-left like there is a self defined movement like the alt-right. "they" are just trying to spin a narrative that the alt-right is just a very right leaning right and not a white nationalist movement by building an imaginary alt-left to act as a counterbalance. they also need an ideological enemy, and the "intellectual and radical alt-left" will be it, even if it doesn't exist, they'll will it into existence like every conservative boogieman made from straw.

Is it an established buzzword? I hadn't heard it until now. I see what you're saying about there being a logic behind its use. I'm just unsure it's seeing widespread use.
Although I have come across the phrase "neoliberal" a few times. Was never sure what it meant. Sounds like a buzzword to me.

That is slightly amusing to me. Neoliberal and alt-left are, apparently, derogatory terms invented by people who dislike liberals to insult liberals. Meanwhile, the term alt-right came from a white supremacist in an attempt to sanitise far-right extremism.

Yeah it's sort of amplified by the fact that "liberal" can mean multiple pretty different things in politics, so it's hard to know which sense is now "neo", whatever that means. I one time attended a talk at college given by this economist and afterwards he got asked a pretty hostile question by someone who didn't like his "neoliberal" economic opinions. Afterwards I hung around to ask him something else and he was going on about how every time someone uses the word "neoliberal" to describe something, he immediately knows that person is totally ignorant of the subject because there is basically no coherent ideology or group of people that the term encompasses. It's usually used as a catch-all for supporters of the "establishment" of a particular area, but that's such a nebulous concept it is essentially devoid of meaning.
