Matthew Shepherd was a young gay American boy who was severely beaten and tortured by a group of skinheads whom he had never met or harmed in any way, hung up on a wire fence while he pleaded for his life, tortured some more over a period of hours, then left to die, which he did after almost a full night alone, terrified and in agony. His crime was being gay.
