the former Alaska governor allowed that the details behind the manufacturer’s decision to keep some 1,000 jobs in Indiana at the president-elect’s behest, rather than move them to Mexico, are not yet clear. But touting the value of free markets, Palin signaled her disapproval if it was a case of “political intrusion using a stick or carrot to bribe or force one individual business to do what politicians insist.”
“When government steps in arbitrarily with individual subsidies, favoring one business over others, it sets inconsistent, unfair, illogical precedent,” she asserted.
And in an apparent jab at Trump, whom she famously endorsed in a rambling speech earlier this year, she asked: “Republicans oppose this, remember? Instead, we support competition on a level playing field, remember? Because we know special interest crony capitalism is one big fail.”

Yep. America elected a man who made it abundantly clear that he had no experience and a range of outlandish ideas. But that is okay, because he trash-talked immigrants and "the liberal elite".

What I wonder though, is it's saved a thousand jobs for $7 million, thats ~$7000/job. Is $7000 per person cheaper than the additional unemployment/welfare that would be incurred by laying off the employees?

I mean I wish Solyndra wasn't a failure but I have no problem with giving out federal funds generally to companies to spur innovation, with the risk always that the innovations might not work out. This is giving tax breaks so that a company will send only half of its factory workforce overseas instead of all of it. The upside to the former is quite striking and the upside to the latter is quite limited.

That was $500 million for ~1,000 permanent jobs. And it's the same deal too, giving private companies public money to create jobs. IIRC the solar panels being made in California was a big part of the deal. Solyndra also got $25 million in tax relief from California.
The Carrier deal is $7 million for 1,000 jobs. It's a lot cheaper per job. Plus it's a safer bet because Carrier is actually a real company with products people actually buy.

I don't have a problem with giving public money to private businesses to help them create new products...I'm a Democrat. Trump is not. If his plan to keep jobs in the US is to personally make a deal with every employer giving them special tax breaks in order to not send jobs overseas, that is the textbook definition of crony capitalism, and is so fragmented there cannot possibly be a grand overarching goal achieved in an intelligent or efficient way. If trump were to do this on a national scale, say tax breaks across the board for companies who keep factory jobs in the US, then that's more defensible, though I question the wisdom of paying to maintain jobs that are economically not viable due to long term trends like globalization and automation. Governments should not protect dying industries, they should be training workers from dying industries to do other work, or if they are too old to be trained viably, given enough welfare to live out their years in dignity.
