the trump problem doesn't really rise from a singular issue, the way things are gerrymandered right now the republicans can carry an election with only 46% of the vote. the democrats have been ignoring the problem for over a decade and it's biting them in the ass. if redistricting was done to balance the scales then we'd stop seeing republicans lose the popular vote and win the electoral college, or at least the margins would be much less out of alignment. it's been the republican battle plan since 2000 or earlier to foster a permanent republican majority and they have worked that plan since. democrats never had a response, and with the "populism" of barack obama in 08 and his sweeping win in 12 i think democrats got overconfident. never had a response for what republicans were doing in the flyover states, never worried about gerrymandering, and now the price is being paid.
trump is a product of a republican machine that's been developed over the last 15-20 years and while they were in-fighting over who'd eventually turn it on, along came trump who saw a big red button and couldn't help himself.
