Take any positive number. n
If n is even, divide by 2.
If n is odd, multiply by 3 and then add 1.

I took 25 and then I divided it by two and then two some more and then I pressed on a button on the calculator and then another one and then I got 0.56.

25 is an odd number. You'd have to do 3(25)+1 which gives you 76, an even number, then you divide by 2.

10 / 2 = 5
5(3)+1 = 16
16 / 2 = 8
8 / 2 = 4

I just discovered this when browsing YouTube and found it interesting how such a problem that any 4th grader can play around with is one of the most complex problems that stumps mathematicians. They are mostly stumped by the lack of patterns. Ambiguity also freaks me the fuck out so not knowing why all of these numbers will eventually end up with 1 somewhat gives me chills.

In mathematics, any number of cases supporting a conjecture, no matter how large, is insufficient for establishing the conjecture's veracity, since a single counterexample would immediately bring down the conjecture. Mathematical journals sometimes publish the minor results of research teams having extended the search for a counterexample farther than previously done. For instance, the Collatz conjecture, which concerns whether or not certain sequences of integers terminate, has been tested for all integers up to 1.2 × 1012 (over a trillion). However, the failure to find a counterexample after extensive search does not constitute a proof that no counterexample exists nor that the conjecture is true, because the conjecture might be false but with a very large minimal counterexample.

Instead, a conjecture is considered proven only when it has been shown that it is logically impossible for it to be false.
