a dallas radio staion that's been around for 27 years has been disolved with no warning or explaination. they switched format to 24 hour christmas music. over the last week several of the dj's and show hosts on KDGE have been supporting protests and telling people how to get involved and sharing heavily on social media.
on wednesday the station was disolved and all of the dj's and hosts were let go. the station now tells listeners to redirect to another station. an oldies station. with conservative trump suppprting djs and hosts.
seriously. i think this just happened. there has been no talk of KDGE shutting down, afaik they are one of dallas' more popular stations with millenials and gen xers.
i don't have time to dig up comments on this change atm, but i'll look into it later. find out if this has been planned for a while or was literally a response to a liberal culture at the Edge.

With Congress under Republican control, left-wing supporters in the USA are really going to have to step it up. Especially if Trump's threat to regress abortion laws goes forward. That'll be a very important moment.

i'll be figuring out what happened to KDGE in a bit. some background since i've already done some reading. first and foremost, it sounds like this decision came down wednesday with no warning a re-format was coming. KDGE is owned by iHeart Radio which is owned by Clear Channel i do believe. KDGE as a station was branded in 1989 as dallas' only "alternative rock station" and has survived multiple parent companies and station switches. What i am reading in dallas independent newspapers and online publications is nothing but hindsight speculation as to what happened, "they are mainstream rock now, not alternative, they aren't relevant," are among the chief speculations. they were not actually ranked super highly, evidently, ranking 21st on some list but i'm not sure what they were referring to. ratings possibly?
it's just odd, because other clear channel stations in dallas have changed format but they've all done it with much fanfare. in the instance of KDGE they played one final song, then announced a format change and that listeners should listen to 97.1 the Eagle for the "sound" of KDGE, and that 102.1 would now become an "adult contemporary" station after christmas. it's also odd, because there are no adult contemporary stations in dallas because they do terribly against all the pop stations. haven't had one in like 10 years. also, we already have a 24 hour christmas music station called KLUV that has been doing a seasonal format change for a few decades. so i don't know why we'd need another, especially since they playlist is identical to KLUV (another clear channel station if i'm not mistaken.)
afaik they were the only dj's on dallas radio that were encouraging people to protest Trump, helping people to organize by sharing information on social media. the last thing i heard, this last tuesday night, was their evening drive DJ mention that the "safety pin protest movement" was having no impact and that people should consider doing something "more substantive." the next day i was listening to Christmas music on the way home...
and the 24 hour commercial free christmas music channel seems like such a rush job. see, there's no profits there at all. no commercials? that's going to be a month without revenue. KDGE brought in revenue, and normally they'd keep that revenue stream open until they're ready to reformat with a turn key operation. that's what i've always seen them do in the past with dallas radio station format changes. (clear channel has owned lots of dallas radio for years. dunno how much of the market they own now.) instead they chose to forgo that revenue in lieu of a disruptive change that brings them nothing.
not to mention, KDGE was still spending millions on EDGE Fest, their yearly concert festival that's still going to be going on. they've already booked bands and sold tickets. it's happening, and there's no Edge left anymore. it's just weird how out of nowhere this is coming from.
the timing and the circumstances seem so strange. did the parent company pull the plug on an entire radio station because their dj's were expressing their political beliefs and commiserating with a liberal audience?
i'm, like, actually just a few more google searches away from summarizing all this up in an email and sending it to the Dallas Morning News and asking them to look into it.

I don't think it's political. Clear Channel would have anarcho-syndicalist talk radio if it brough in the ratings and ad $$$$$$.

Yeah! it was fucked up. that's why i didn't feel bad keeping them. kids are stupid. i found a wallet with 300 bucks in it my first year in high school and i gave it to the teacher for no thanks! no thank yous from anyone. but one time i think i was a SENIOR in high school i found a cell phone and i found the dude whose phone it was and i gave it to him and he really appreciated it and i think he maybe offered me 10 dollaresd. but i haven't found anything cool since high school

Its complicated but actually its NOW the other way around. In the beginning that was true. Clear Channel made its original fortunes in outdoor ads like Billboards - They are the company that has the best real estate for ads in Times Square downtown San Francisco and most major Cities in USA - In name because people hate ads and billboards Clear Channel decided to become iHeart Radio Butttttttt Each has its own Stock ticker and frankly to stay on topic EACH is a Crappy Investment which is the only reason I have a clue about the weird complex nature of these two companies that are really one company depending on which one ONE has invested in.
Clear Channel Outdoor is the largest outdoor ad operation in USA and I think they cover some stuff in Eu and for sure I have viewed their moniker in Ski areas of Canada. If you look at each stock wise you notice how going back to say 5 years its been on a slide downhill for the most part year after year after year. No signs its going to go up. I attended a couple of Iheart festivals and they indeed are fun in Las Vegas. Lots of bang re many great acts all in one venue. I need to get my act 2gether so I can attend another Iheart music fest in Vegas.

kdge has been one of the better stations at involving their audience through the years. they covered dallas indie music in the 90s and it was always great fun to go to clubs on weekends when we were underage because KDGE would be outside and broadcasting and interacting with the crowd outside the venue. they also do EDGE Fest which is a huge alternative rock music festival that's been going on for a couple of decades now. in the past they have pulled hundreds of thousands of people to huge venues over multiple days. they also did all of the bare minimum stuff, the call in contests and free tickets and that kind of thing. in to 00s they had Edge Club which was one of the first broadcast Techno/Electronic shows in the US. it was a weekly 4 hour broadcast that featured live local DJs opening for a big name headliner, and the venue for the live show was usually the Lizard Lounge - probably the one actual club in dallas where i've spent the most time - but it moved around to different venues. but we'd go specifically for edge club, i wouldn't go to the lizard lounge otherwise, it's like a weird goth bondage den. seriously. people caged up and dancing with nipple clamps and latex pants. it was an awesome place to do drugs. lol
so they had a long history of promoting and showcasing local dallas bands and music and involving the community in a grass roots way to support local bands and even local dallas businesses. their heavy use of social media is just the most recent way they're connecting with people these days.

both my university and the other big one have their own radio channels, which are a really big thing on campus. People are huge fans of them even if they don't usually listen to the radio. A lot of people can work there, get their own shows, do their own broadcasting... It's really cool.

Here in US States college radio in big cities is a big deal for the community and I mean far more than even the city they serve. I still listen on line to KCRW Santa Monica - Great music programing mixed with National Public Radio mixed with a terrific cooking show I record on weekends and couple3 political shows that end up all over the airwaves in rest of USA - LA has KPPC - Both KCRW and KPPC are City college stations with a huge number of repeaters so they cover Palm Springs 100+ miles away and Santa Barbara 100 miles in the other direction. I guess I should give honorable mention to local KPBS with studios more 1st class than any other commercial station - Founder of Qualcomm Irwin Jacobs my former University Professor build from scratch a cutting edge designed Radio and TV operation for the local state college.

well, it's the only thing i'm seeing so far where people are speculating people were fired for expressing political opinions. they don't tie the whole station being shut down, but all of their personalities were doing it... like telling people where to go for protests downtown...
