Topic: VR is now a safe space

Anonymous A started this discussion 10 years ago #57,061

Externally hosted imageWe've sometimes hear reports that players receive unwanted attention and feel crowded, mobbed or otherwise uncomfortable in Rec Room. I've had this experience myself :-/ Whether it's just over-enthusiastic people who don't realize they're too in your face, or someone actually being deliberately creepy, it's no fun. Behold the ghost button.

The new ghost button is designed to (a) be quick and easy to use, and (b) immediately create breathing room to figure out the situation without someone waving objects in your face or saying inappropriate things at you.

So you don't feel claustrophobic while playing Nintendoes.

Goddamn, m8s. It isn't that confusing. There's a button to turn human-looking player avatars into generic ghosts. The idea is that they aren't as intimidating as player avatars can be.

VR is very immersive. I can see how somebody coming up to you and leaning their virtual face into yours could be very uncomfortable.

the griefing is one thing about multiplayer VR games that i've been wondering about. remember when you were a kid and you'd walk up behind someone and cover their eyes with your hands and saying guess who? imagine that, but with like a dozen griefers and waggling game modded dicks in your face and doing everything they can to make you super uncomfortable. griefing in standard games is bad enough, i've had griefers really piss me off before and get an emotional outburst out of me. more along the lines of yelling god damnit and rage quitting, but i could see how avatars in VR could actually be intimidating and bullying.

i'm reminded of a Day-z video i saw where a dude was roleplaying a psychopath and would break people's legs in game and make them crawl around and shoot at them and make them... do things - and people actually did it. well, the dude i watched play along was playing along. at first. then when it got creepy, the dude got weirded out and scared and was like literally running from the guy and sounded like at times he was going to maybe cry. it was kind of amazing. funny, but also disturbing, but the most disturbing part was why did the guy do as instructed - out of fear - instead of just logging and finding a new server. it was a weirdly immersive, and kinda disturbing look at what people are willing to submit to in a virtual environment when confronted with behavior that in the real world would be terrifying. it's almost like they player couldn't stop himself from doing what he was told by a figure with power over them, even in a video game.

i can see how VR is really going to fuck with a lot of people's heads.

It is pretty incredible how immersed people can become with VR. I think you're right that, with some VR video games, that'll be a double-edged sword.

On the flip-side, this high immersion gives VR some very positive applications too. Putting a person in a pleasant VR environment can significantly reduce pain and stress, which can be effective in all sorts of medical-type scenarios.

@734,190 (Metæ !goTRUMPlbg)
Yes! A bunch of black guys with afros in suits blocking a pool would really benefit from VR.

It doesn't fucking explain that it turns them into ghosts. It just says it's a ghost button. What, did you expect me to click on the thumbnail or something?

Figgit.

creepy stuff? like he'd break their legs so they couldn't move then make them strip their clothes off and say things or he'd break their arms and turn on creepy music and sing to them. i'm trying to find the video. but yeah, oh yeah, and he'd heal them. not completely, but he'd let them linger near death and then heal them up so they didn't die. he'd make them beg for him to stop and stuff.

I remember reading about one Day Z guy who was "taken hostage" by a gang of stronger players for a while. They took his items and forced him to walk into buildings first to check for zombies.

Not a bad tactic during FND outbreaks.

@OP
So it's Ostrich Mode, basically. Does this mean that Minichan is also, in fact, a "safe space"?
