Donald Trump says he doesn't care and that this issue was settled in the Supreme Courts, but this doesn't necessarily mean this law is permanent now with a Republican House of Representatives and a Republican Senate, right?

Married people are considered family and entitled to certain rights in regards to their spouse. If the law doesn't recognize this, you're just basically two people living together. For example, you can't file taxes as a family with your room mate or just decide you get his stuff if he dies. Those are pretty simple examples, but there are a host of other rights that legally recognized marriage offers a couple.

the first thing that comes to mind is if one of them gets hurt and is in the hospital and the other one is simply not informed or allowed to get close because legally you are not kin

It would probably depend on the couple. Medical visitation and making decisions for them if they are incapacitated is important. Inheritance and community property is probably a big deal for some that have been estranged from their families, as they would want their spouse making the decisions about their home and property rather than their bitter parents and relatives. It would kind of be like if you had a wife and she died and then her family decided you didn't exist and everything you and your wife owned was now theirs. Please pack your shit (no pun intended) and find a new home. Also, as married people you are sort of one "unit" for taxation purposes. Being able to be legally viewed as a family unit rather than just two people living together makes a big difference financially. Marriage rights are kind of big deal.
