Stephen King has a short story called Quitters Inc, about a company which guarantees to make clients stop smoking. Basically their method is to assign people to follow the person everywhere, 24 hours a day, and if he smokes they (in the case of the guy in the story) beat up his disabled kid or put his wife in an electrically-charged cage. That's if he smokes once. If he smokes twice, they brutally rape the wife and break all the child's limbs. If he fails a third time they admit they've failed and shoot him.

It was turned into a segment for the anthology movie Cat's Eye, though of course all the more violent parts of the story were cut out.

Luck has nothing to do with it. It is only a question of desire.

But luck is still appreciated. Tomorrow I'll start and although I know there are far worse addictions, it's going to be agonizing and depressing.

> it's going to be agonizing and depressing.

With that mentality you will 100% fail. I guarantee it.

You need to look at the 'agony' as your body healing itself (which is what it is). Don't think you're depriving yourself of something, think of it as depriving the poison in your system of something. You're killing the 'monster' inside you. When the cravings come (and they will for the first 3 days, but they won't last more than a few minutes each time) laugh at them. Think of them as the 'monster' which wants to kill you dying screaming.

That seems unnecessary. Why not just have the guy stop the other guy from smoking?

The easy way to stop smoking is a book by Allen Carr which you shoukd read while chainsmoking (or thereabouts). Read it slowly, concentrating on the same old arguments you have heard before, plainly laid out.
It is influenced by the hypnosis approach to quitting and many people recommend this book because it has worked for them.
