Not necessarily. The film asks whether the mother isn't responsible at least partly for fucking him up (the mother herself seems to think she is, all her talk of going to Hell, and saying "it was my fault" when the old woman hit her). Remember the scene where she tells her screaming baby boy she would frankly rather be back in Paris than changing his diaper? Sure he's a baby, but isn't it possible he feels her hatred of him?
The film makes it very clear that she didn't want to get pregnant (that striking scene in the hospital where she's pregnant with all the other happy mothers, and she miserably regards her swollen belly as something monstrous and alien), isn't sure why she's married, and is a mother who tries to mask hostility with superficial kindness. If she had her way, she would put her life on rewind and start all over again as somebody else, since she's not very fond of herself.
It's a complex, layered film, and not at all easy to watch or grasp.

Sure, though I rely on my knowledge of sociopathy and I'm inclined to see that the trait is inherent regardless, and it's severe abuse/neglect that makes a full blown dangerous person more likely to arise when the inherent trait is present, rather than fairly innocuous annoyance while performing duties.

True, good points. My (non-professional) belief is that psychos can't really be made, they are to some extent born with some shit left out of them, but that still isn't enough. It requires environmental factors to make that lunacy and 'evil' flourish.
