that's not true at all, people vote straight tickets all the time, then it doesn't matter if you know them or not. don't discourage people from voting, tell them how to get educated quickly.

you can if you want, or you can pick a party and vote straight ticket which will just vote all republican or all democrat. if you like one party over the other, that's a perfectly valid way to vote.
you can also split your ticket and vote for individuals if you like and if you do that it's not a bad idea to know about the person you're voting for if you're voting against your party. if you're an independent, then it's important you learn about who you're voting for. but it's certainly okay to do something like - usually vote 1 way for presidents, another way for representatives, and another way for judges. i have voted for liberal presidents, conservative representatives, and liberal judges based on nothing more than their party affiliation - i generally prefer a more liberal
interpretation of more conservative laws, ergo liberal judges and conservative representatives. i don't
really care all that much about knowing the nuts and bolts of every platform of every person running.
and catherine, if you're really concerned about who to vote for, then
go to the polls and talk to people handing out fliers and stuff. they'll be canvassing the polling place looking for exactly people like you.
but, it is asking a lot of people to not vote a straight ticket. pick a party, vote straight ticket, easiest thing you can do and no one can give you any grief about voting that way
at all. that's how most people do it. and you're under no obligation to tell anyone how you voted or why.

I just marked down all of the democrats in my sample ballot. I'm just not sure about my nonpartisan candidates. Also, I'm not registered with a party. I just tend to find myself agreeing with the Democrats half the time. I did at one point think about re-registering as a Democrat though.

As far as Presidential or Senatorial votes go, California is going to be a blue state. It's not going to matter if you show up and write in Mickey Mouse on your ballot. We're going to be a blue state. Focus on your local politics. Read the propositions. That is probably where your vote will matter most.
