I don't have a great mental record of her biography but im pretty sure she founded a nonprofit and did something else before Bill became governor of Arkansas. She isn't a rags to riches story because her father was a small business owner but she definitely did not rely on her husband to provide opportunities for her.

Even Elizabeth Warren had a chance at being VP this year, and being VP is a heartbeat or two terms away from being president. Hillary is incredibly motivated so I grant you her path to the top would have been longer or more convoluted without Bill, but I think there's a decent chance she gets there anyway.

tbh both trump and hillary are both the product of privilege. maybe one more than the other, but hillary wasn't exactly poor. her father owned a textile factory or something. he was a small business owner and was able to send her to yale. i'm guessing yale wasn't quite as expensive back then as it is today, but i'm betting it wasn't cheap or exactly easy to get into. they're both the product of privilege, and they both exemplify the modern day American Reality that upward mobility is determined in large part by the level of affluence you are born into. the American Dream that a person can go from rags to riches is not the reality for the vast majority of people, and only a small exception have that kind of life arc. it's not a dream for everyone, it's a shared delusion that such a reality is achievable for anyone who's willing to work hard. the reality is that everyone works hard, and that your life earnings are in large part determined by your parents level of affluence.
both trump and hillary were born into affluence, and have benefited greatly from it. trump may have had a richer arc, but he had wealthier beginning. but that's not to say hillary didn't benefit similarly, if not to the same scale. they are both very, very far from middle class 2 income families or single working parents that make up the majority of their voters.
this is a long way for me to say that trump is NOT a self made man, and hillary is not a self made woman. they both had immodest beginnings.
