it's illegal in some instances, but can still be bought and sold. so it's like illegal to whale for it, but finding it on a beach is okay. there is a difference too, fresh ambergris is disgusting and stinks like shit. old fermented ambergris dried out on a beach smells like flowers. you can sell the old waxy stuff obviously come from some dead whale long ago. fresh stuff says, "i just killed a whale," and i think that's what's illegal. but the shit on the beach is fine in most places i do believe. america may be a place with it being an illegal trade and even having a lump from the beach can get you into some trouble

i don't remember, i read about it a long time ago. it's still worth a lot, especially since all legal ambergris is found on a beach. just can't remember the finer details. but unless you're a whaler, i wouldn't worry about it.
