It's called photogrammetry. You use a camera and load a couple hundred photos into some software and it spits out a file. This was 300 photos, but I had the basic shape nailed using 80.

oh that, i read about using that to 'scan' rooms for virtual reality

Yeah room scans are hard as fuck. So is scanning a car.

this is pretty neat. is there any software that lets you import your scans to be viewed with a VR headset? if you don't know of anything off the shelf that already does that is it giving you a file that can be manipulated with modeling software like maya or something? cause, i'll tell you, if you can scan an object and then view that scan in VR there are probably a number of uses for that people might pay for.
think online shopping...

Here's the .obj file
I've figured out that I have to learn a whole bunch more programs. I've been playing around converting tris to quads and then mesh to nurbs so I can import into something I'm familiar with. I probably have to learn Maya or Modo or 3DS but I'm playing in Blender at the moment

r04r mentioned Destinations on Steam and that's probably where I'll end up if I go down the VR path. Google just bought out Daydream VR and it looks good for entry level stuff and a phone.

just having a 3d model of the shirt you want to buy that you can scroll around in in your browser is quite nice. but for most products there are already handmade 3d models so it wouldn't really be useful to do this type of thing.

@previous (dw) > for most products there are already handmade 3d models
lol, what? that's absolutely not true. i have an entire living room of furniture that there are no 3d models of. i can see myself eventually scanning my living room with a process like OP is using and then loading it onto my VR goggles and then shopping by taking 3d models of things i like and arranging them in my digital living room, and if it looks great i'll order it up. it's actually not a huge leap tech wise, OP is already scanning whole buildings and stuff. and it would be way easier for a manufacturer to photograph their product line rather than have an artist replicate their whole inventory by hand. and literally no one is even doing that.
but a big problem with online shopping is not being able to "touch and feel" an item you're interested in, and being able to manipulate it in a VR space might be enough to get people over that hurdle. especially if you can digitally place an item in a digital replica of your home that you can walk around. there's precedent for this kind of stuff too, some clothes website will let you upload a photo of yourself and you can "dress yourself" in clothes from the website to see how you'll look. that's all to help people shop online that normally need to try something on before buying it.

I think I stuffed up the textures in that model I uploaded too.

I got this far in VR, but without a headset I can't really test it. I had to do a work around to even open the Destinations editor

My next attempt is looking better. I have a proper floor and lights to start with now like I'm supposed to, instead of getting all carried away.
Have you got Destinations working with your Oculus Rift?

Yeah my 3D printer shit itself, so I gave it to a bro and he did mad upgrades and got it running cool. He got my cheap shit, broken ass, Chinese printer upgraded as fuck, controlled by a Pi that he plays with in browser, and got a web cam watching over it so he can watch the 12+ hour prints from work.
He has printed all the brackets and braces and mounts and built a 1200mm x 900mm CNC router/laser cutter/3D printer and I just watched a vid of it with a ballpoint pen cable tied to the head stock drawing a logo on a piece of paper.
The future is already here. Having these things that print and cut and make anything you can dream up is a very liberating feeling. You can do anything you want.
His first project and main motivation for fixing my printer and then using it to make a G-Code rig that can carry whatever head he wants is to make a life sized R2D2 model.

Destinations has scripting now. A guy has got a rifle, rocket launcher, gravity gun and barnacle gun working. The barnacle gun works for movement, like fucking spiderman web slinging around the map. I mentioned the gravity gun acting like a jetpack, so maybe he'll go with that idea. He posted all the scripts on github but it's a bit beyond me getting something like that working. I might make a model of a jetpack, and maybe someone can attach a coupe of gravity gun push physics to it or something.
