I know a guy who made $1000 in a month just to show that he could do it and write about it for a blog. I'd do it if I didn't drive like a crazy person. Would probably scare too many customers.

I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon. Uber at the moment is pretty much selling an app, they have barely any cost. Buying as many cars as they now have Uber drivers, and maintaining them, is a completely different thing to what they are doing now. I also don't think governments would approve of cars without any drivers any time soon.
