Elon Musk gave a great presentation today about his plans for going to Mars. he even showed an early design of the crew vessel. it's huge. the whole rocket dwarfs the Saturn V that took apollo astronauts to the moon. in fact, he said the design is very much complete, meaning the actual vessel will look very much like the design shown today. they've even already begun rapid iteration on a carbon fiber fuel tank and have one that appears ready for testing. They've also finalized their design for the Raptor engine, which is 3 times more powerful than the Merlin engines on the Falcon 9. incidentally, the falcon 9 uses 9 rocket engines. the new interplanetary booster will use 42 engines. it's a real monster.

the design carries around 100 passengers, but he hopes to increase that to 200 people per trip with a larger 2.0 version of the vehicle.

his plan has a time table attached, but of course it's very loose. but he hopes to be flying the thing within 10 years. that's probably not too far fetched, since in 2002 Space X was an office with no furniture. by 2008 they'd been awarded a contract by NASA to deliver cargo to the space station. 8 years later and they are now landing their boosters, about to begin reusing them, and are building a scaled up version (the Falcon Heavy) which should be flying within a few months, actually.

since they already have the production to manufacture 300 engines a year, they definitely have the capacity to build the 42 engines they'll need. and since engines are actually done, the only thing left is to build the rocket structure and develop the Transport Vehicle. it looks like they'll begin work on that pretty soon, and should be doing flight tests and orbits at around 6 or 7 years.

his plan also called for Red Dragon missions to mars beginning with the next Hohmann transfer window in 2 about years. Red Dragon is Space X's capsule, and they want to begin sending them immediately. first to test propulsive landing on mars, and eventually to start sending initial cargo drops for eventual human use. each Red Dragon can carry around 3 tons or so. but the Interplanetary Transfer Vehicle can carry - i think he said - around 500 tons. (that might've actually been the launch weight of the whole rocket, not exactly sure what the internal payload capacity will be.)

the costs involved are going to be huge, of course, but Musk was almost selling tickets already. he's aiming to have the cost of a ticket be around $200,000 per person. right NOW it'd cost you about 20 million to spend a few days on ISS by way of Russia. the cost to put 1 kilo of non-human payload into orbit is about 20k. if i was a satellite it would cost around 1.5 million dollars to launch me into space. so he's talking about hopefully a 6 - 10 fold decrease in cost vs. traditional launches when using his Interplanetary Transport.

it's still a huge chunk of money, but honestly i won't need a house when i'm living on Mars. 200k is totally doable, and if i've got another 10-15 years to prepare for the trip, i can totally have that kind of money ready to go. which means i've made up my mind. this is now my new life ambition. i WILL be the first transexual space hooker on mars. doesn't that have a nice fucking ring to it?

here's the carbon fiber "development tank." using carbon fiber to store cryo fuel is extremely hard. it's prone to crack and leak, so for Space X to be doing this there must've been some kind of major break through. in fact in the presentation he said that it's only NOW possible because of recent advancements in the manufacturing process. but, this is the fuel tank for the space ship part - not the booster.

this is the Space Ship. this is what uses that huge fuel tank, so you can kinda imagine the size. enormous. this thing will take off and land vertically, just like their boosters. it will land on mars, re-fuel, and then return to earth for a return trip. this is how he plans to bring people back. if you want, just hop on and come home. anytime. as long as there's a transfer window... about every 2 years.

this one made me gasp. it's a scale comparison to other rockets, including the Saturn V which it dwarfs. but the real shocking part is performance. the white bar represents vehicle performance in terms of fuel/payload. not only can the Mars Vehicle carry well over 1 million pounds, it does it super efficiently and with much less fuel per pound of payload.
