I carried fountain pens all through middle school, high school and college (in grad school now). I have roughly $1100 in pens (currently a single three-pen case) in my backpack as of this morning. Be careful with them, don't draw unnecessary attention, and never lend them out. You'll be fine.

I regularly carry a set of pens that, at MSRP, cost more than my laptop. But some people have bikes that are worth more than my car, and some people have watches that are worth more than the condo I live in... I find it best to just shut up about it if you're not around people that would understand.

It could be the ink. I have never been able to get Oyster Grey to play nicely with a pen. It's also very possible that it's fake, depending on where they bought it from. Fake C/C Montblancs are quite common on eBay. Also custom grinding is an option. I haven't had the greatest experience with Montblanc nibs out of the box but once the nibs are tuned they're the best I have ever used.

There are posts about this on a regular basis, so... yes. Never leave your pen where someone else can take it. People will be attracted to the shiny pen and try to write with it (or just steal it because they think it's interesting enough to be valuable but not interesting enough for the owner to notice it is missing). I only let people touch pens that I'd be able to easily replace on Amazon or Goulet, and I still always ask if they know how to hold and write with one.

A few years ago I would have had the same reaction. But everyone's got a hobby that can be far more expensive than outsiders can even conceive.
I met a guy in a class who collected limited edition shoes at hundreds of dollars a pair. Never worn, just stored and catalogued. One of my ex-roommates collected single blade shaving razors. I've seen watch collections where a single shelf is worth more than I'll make in my lifetime. My girlfriend collects limited edition cosmetics, even though she tells me the packaging is usually more of a draw than the product inside. I have also met an uncountable amount of people who would not believe me if I told them any of these hobbies existed, or how expensive they can actually be. So your reaction to someone spending an incomprehensible amount of money on something you never knew could be expensive is, in my mind, identical to someone not believing you could have spent more than a few bucks on a pen.
