I just heard an American narrator on a documentary pronounce it "willst." First of all, Americans shouldn't use that word. Second of all, I think "willst" is objectively wrong. Thanks for confirming. I will write a letter.

Informally, smashing the order to include noun in between preposition "whilst" and verb, typically whatever the subject should be (e.g. "Whilst I'm driving") is in absolutely acceptable form. This is the only capacity in which I mangle it. Otherwise, I adhere to the rule hardly and fastly enough.

Why not? It's a real English word. It even dates back to before the American-British schism so I think it's perfectly valid to use in America.
If I say "I like to drink whilst shitposting on Minichan", it may raise a few eyebrows but every American, even every Texan, knows what I mean. If I say "some guy just drove his lorry onto the pavements in Nice" I may as well be speaking Swahili.
