It's still the definitive controller that every company imitates and improves upon. See the controllers for both the Xbox line of consoles and the PlayStation line of consoles. The only company that seems to muck around with the formula is Nintendo ironically. I really hope the NX has a similar layout to the modified editions of the SNES controller as it's launch controller not an addon one.

Playstation especially. It was originally going to be a SNES add-on but when that fell through they developed it into their own console. The Playstation controller was designed to be similar to the SNES controller (since that's what the system was based upon), with one important difference; to reflect the new 3D graphics their console was capable of producing, the PS controller was "3D" compared to the flat "2D" SNES controller.
