Topic: What would the United States be like today if slavery were still legal?

Would it have been abolished recently?

No. It would still be here. US white people are incredibly racist, especially Southerners.

First, the question is nonsensical because if slavery were "still legal" it could not have been "abolished recently".

I think, in an alternate reality where the War Between the States never happened, slavery would have largely disappeared by the early-to-mid 20th century for the same reason that farmers no longer use horses to plow fields: it's economically inefficient. Even if you have "free" labor, John Deere is a lot more productive.

Also it's important to note that only 6% of Southern whites owned slaves at the peak of slavery. It was never something every family had. Most Southern whites were dirt poor sharecroppers.

No need for Mexican lettuce pickers

To sum up, I don't think it would be much different. The plantations that owned slaves (again, 94% of Southern whites did not own slaves) would have mechanized sometime in the early 20th century and the slaves would have been freed.

Slavery would be like horses are today: a plaything for the rich 1%
