How can they call it an "eye collection" when it doesn't even include eyes??

A fine idea, Shen.

Say, are you a friend of Butan's?

yeah, I thought there were going to be eyes, maybe a Japanese set of anmime eyes or some shit because Sephora sounds Japanese

> Sephora sounds Japanese
Not quite. The "ph" sound doesn't exist in Japanese.

Not that a Japanese company couldn't use that name in English, mind you.

What about the "f" sound?

@previous (Metæ)
Nearly. The closest individual character they have is "fu". Which they could use (in combination with vowels, if needed) to approximate any variants of "f" or "ph" sounds from other languages.

Waifu is a funny word. It's how the English word "wife" gets imported into the Japanese language. But after that, it came back into English with a very different meaning. Like some sort of linguistic tennis.

Yes. Buy buy buy!

So if Sephora went to Japan, they'd be "Seifura"?

Sheila LaBoof replied with this 10 years ago, 5 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #717,935

@717,920 (RWBY Rhubarb? !!iNo3FkiZx)
None of the letters are Japanese letters either -- we can safely assume that the word is an approximation for non-Japanese since the letters aren't Japanese regardless. For instance, there's no English r sound in Japanese but we can assume the similar tongue flap Japanse sound.

Google translate has it as "Sefora". Although, the actual Japanese letters for that spell out "Sefuora", which is close enough anyway.

@717,935 (Sheila LaBoof)
I don't think that Japan is actually involved. Apparently, Sephora is a French company.

Although, the fact that Google Translate has a translation might mean they have a presence in Japan.

I like this phrase and may steal it in the near future to describe other instances where a word has bounced around and changed meanings.

I'm curious, how did the company come up with the name Sephora anyhow? Does it derive from anything, or was it completely invented, like how Kodak was just invented with the purpose of sounding futuristic but doesn't mean anything otherwise other than naming the company.

Yes, that one was a deciding factor. I am a big fan of purple eyeshadows so I was already disposed to this set, and Marc Jacobs mascara is hands-down the best volumizing mascara on the market right now (out of some 20 or so I've tried). But add the liquid glitter eyeliner and I can't say no. I do already have the Nars eyeshadow so I'll probably give that away, as well as the false eyelashes. Still a great deal.

you should definitely give that away to me

beckyderp !Hi.HILLARY (OP) replied with this 10 years ago, 4 days later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #719,066

Update:

The cream eyeshadows are way too dark (more of a punched-in-the-eye grey color than a purple) and the liquid glitter eyeliner is freakishly glittery from a huge distance. The other items don't save it because the mascara is smaller than expected (and I already have one though it is starting to dry out), and I already have the powder eyeshadow and no one needs another black eyeliner. Also I don't wear false eyelashes.

I'm not sure what I expected from a kit called "extravagant eyes" but this is too extravagant. I shall be sending the kit back. Thanks.
