So i turned 18 yesterday and my mother told me her family is jewish. my father's family is catholic. (we're italians).

So apparently in the 1920s my great-grandpa managed to destroy all of the records of his family being jewish and converted to catholicism. he even changed surname, don't know what the original was. I don't know how he knew what was gonna happen, but yeah. He basically saved my family.

So my mother told me they keep this a secret and they tell the kids only when they turn 18. She told me never to tell anyone about this. they still fear something may happen? i never knew i was jewish. there's nothing at home. not a symbol, nothing. it was like in harry potter, "you're a wizard, harry". "you're a jew, OP".

we are catholics, so my family goes to catholic church etc. we are basically just jewish by blood. does this even make sense?

can someone help me understand? my mother told me she knows nothing about judaism because my grandpa was raised a catholic by my great-grandpa, so she's basically a catholic with jewish blood.

I would like to learn more about my culture. is this right? i really know nothing, it is something completely unexpected.

do i go to a synagogue? how does this even work? where do i find one? will i be accepted?

Most denominations of Judaism see it passed down by the mother over generations, meaning for you to be Jewish, your mother would have to be Jewish, and her mother, and her mother. From reading your story, it sounds like that breaks down a couple generations back, so by most accepted (conservative, modern orthodox, black hatter chabad) definitions, you're not Jewish. Reform and reconstructionist Judaism have their own definitions that would view you as Jewish if you see that as part of your identity, but I'm less familiar with them.

I guess I'm saying you could/should explore this as part of your heritage that you were denied because of shitty people and antisemitism (because it is a part of your heritage and it's an interesting and rich history and culture), but not freak out because you've been living a lie.

This is what you must do. All Christians are sloppy 2nd Jews. In other circles they are called 2nd Hand Jews or Jews once removed.

Assuming you have ditched the Cathy~licking Church.

Just pick any random church - Not totally random because you must find one that accepts you without the necessary drowning that most Christians are forced to endure. Make sure they will allow you to engage in Christian Cannibalism. Not all Churches allow walk in's to eat Jesus body and drink Jesus blood. You want a church that will take care of you without drowning or starvation.
Join that church but no need to tithe because you're Jewish.
