You might remember the story of the camera that couldn't detect dark faces very well. There may be something about shade contrast within a face or contrast between the face and the surroundings that plays into the process. Also, to control for the light/dark factor, they need to feed in pictures that have been altered to varying degrees of that, so some pictures are formerly light faces that are dark and vice versa. Maybe it's the noses, for example.
