I usually just bought older editions off Amazon or something. In my experience, textbook publishers rarely change much except for a few diagrams or something from edition to edition. I imagine they just do it to sell more so that the "older editions" don't stay in circulation too long.
In one instance, I went to the school library and just checked the book out (the professor had it on reserve for the class) and copied it.
Copies: 5 cents per page x 300 pages = $15
Textbook: $120
Problem: solved
But, yeah, I don't know about how easy it is to get e-book copies...

I have, especially before exams and to do problems. For arts classes they're great for whenever you zone out during a lecture and missed taking notes.

yeah i just hate having a binder full of loose-leaf. i get that's stupid but ugh they're awful.
printing+binding whatever e-books can be found is probably the best but i haven't found e-book copies of most my books. just one i think.

you could bind the pages with elmer's glue, a strip of burlap, and some heavy cardstock if you want a cover. or punch holes and put them in a clip binder. that'd probably be best. binding loose leaf by hand can result in a few pages coming out.
