Topic: Health insurance and moral obligations

Anonymous A started this discussion 10 years ago #55,414

So I recently discovered I no longer have health insurance (complicated story; I wasn't paying for it directly), and am looking into what my options are.

So far, it looks like the most reasonable option is to simply forego it and self-pay, even considering the $2000/yr fine the USA imposes on self-insurers - although I need to look into this further taking possible future pregnancies into consideration.

But more importantly, and the reason I'm asking here: it seems the USA mandates health insurance cover various forms of birth control. Obviously, it would be immoral to pay for birth control, but does insurance coverage of it "count" if we don't use it?

I will probably ask a priest to be sure, but figured it might be a good idea to get some input here first.

What do other Christians typically do for health care?

Technically, the law says "buy health insurance (or join a medical bill sharing group) or pay $2000/yr extra taxes", so there are options. But the reason for my post is that the birth control coverage might make the insurance option conflict with God's law - I'm just not clear on whether it does even if I don't use that coverage.

this is what Christians are supposed to do - if you believe the bible. which i don't, so do what you want. otherwise, obey the fucking law and get insurance coverage, dimwit. and read your god damned bible for fuck's sake.
