How the guy got any followers at all, let alone many for 20+ years. There's nothing charismatic or interesting about him, he's just a gayelle with a fake French accent parading around in speedos all day.

Some cults I can understand a bit--like a David Koresh or Jim Jones, there's something interesting about the leaders and some philosophy to follow, at least. This guy, it was all very empty and strange.
