Is 'Pikachu' the actual name of the species or the name of that specific creature?

Species. A lot of trainers simply refer to their Pokemon by the species name because they only have one of that species.

Ash's Pikachu is actually named Peekachew, it just sounds almost exactly the same as Pikachu. The species is called Pikachu though.
