I saw and touched a snake today (seriously, I did). They're fine. Interesting and awe-inspiring creatures. Yet after spiders and rats they are the 3rd most feared animal, and they are used as demonic symbols even in ancient religions.
Is this some cock thing? What did Freud have to say about this totally irrational phobia, is it deep down a penis issue?

Freud's opinions are pretty much irrelevant to modern psychology. We have statistical analyses and brain scanners now, and we live in the future.

So far as I can tell, they have said nothing on the issue of snakes. Best guess is that snakes were a danger to our ancestors, and it's an evolutionary thing. But evolutionary psychology is pretty hand-wavy at best.
But still, Freud isn't really in the picture as far as theories about fears about snakes goes.

common sense says that snakes are probably scary because many of them are poisonous and move silently and can get in your house and they dont have legs and some snakes are big enough to eat your children. poisonous snake bites werent really treatable until somewhat recently so a collective fear of snakes will persist for a while probably. also you cant tell what a damn snake is thinking. i have spent a lot of time with snakes and their body language is still confusing to me. i just assume that they arent aggressive because snakes usually arent aggressive.

Since, dicks and snakes, are a hard thing to control, and you know what i mean, religion and psychology made a big thing out of it.
