When the state sponsors religion, the state rules over that religion. It rules over it by being in a position where it can threaten to cut the relationship and all the perks with it. For example there is no law that says everyone must go to church but there is a law that says children must be educated. In this way, religion can spread it's message through a controlled and monitored environment- public schools.
If the state would to suddenly ban religion and not teach it in schools, it would hurt the religion first as parents who are too busy and relaxed wouldn't come to church with their families. However, this would also result in a strategic tactic to bring more follower, and in their goals to recruit more people they would adopt policies to try and control people.

Another point, is that the link between church and state is a sort of a cease fire agreement over the quest to control people. If the peace agreement is ruined, the best case is that the state wins but the fact is that with the disappearance of religion a void is made and some horrible thing may take its place. Why do you think scientology and Mormons inhabite the usa?
