Here's a video that promotes librarianing as the vocation of a Vincent Price-esque literate horror personality. It's from a children's entertainment show from the early 1970s. It also featured Julius Sumner Miller, a US popularizer of science who made segments for television in many English-speaking countries, most recently Australia where he lived.

You make an interesting point. If you ask "why are there more female than male librarians?" the answer is just "men don't want to be librarians i dunno lol". We just accept that men, on average, have little inclination to be librarians or primary school teachers or nurses.
