Using an old Android device as an always-on server and keeping it on permacharge, or building a low power NAS with WoL?

i would go with a nas type thing. i think it would be a lot of work to get a phone to do it properly. alternatively just stream from your pc to a chromecast or something

It's not about how much work it takes to set it up but which is the cheaper option

Depends on what you have obviously. Adding a 3 tb hdd to your current computer is probably the cheapest.

Get a chromecast.

What will that do?

adam djensen replied with this 10 years ago, 14 minutes later, 21 hours after the original post[^] [v] #713,363

@713,359 (A)
Probably not that much more expensive than having it runnig most of the time and a seperate server running 24/7.

I wouldn't with WoL! My PC doesn't support it so if I'm getting a new mobo I may as well make a dedicated server

I never understood this either. Like, ok I saw it and it was good. If it's really good maybe I'll want to see it again in a few years, but that doesn't really warrant using HD space for it.

@713,320 (adam djensen)
> yes but 128gb is like a hundred movies at best
Unless you're downloading aXXo rips or something, I think it'd be a lot less than 100

I often download movies with the intent of watching them at some point. And then when I do want to watch it I dont have to wait!
