so yoiu ever wondwer why we have this way of speaking of functions, that values in a domain are mapped to an image? I looked it up and it was germans. I speculate that it's by analogy to land and projections in map making. A domain can refer to a land, a realm. Mapping can mean taking points from the land and projecting them to a map that is being made. The image is the representation of the land that is being mapped.
