it was a massive joke by lou reed to get them to record something so awful, lou reed has done this many times in his career (releasing stuff he knows is going to be bad, specifically for artistic expression) and metallica were too fuckin dumb and thought they would get street cred (they also did this before, s&m etc)

As per Death Magnetic it's generally more of the 'Metallica Plays Metallica' template, with some good and some bland and generic. Kirk flops his dick on the wah pedal for 30 seconds every song. A few songs are really great though, in particular Now That We're Dead, Am I Savage (awesome main riff) and Halo on Fire.
Also, lol at the idea of Lars playing Spit Out The Bone live. No chance did he even play that in the studio.

St Anger was at least an interesting document of a band in meltdown. It was raw as fuck, uniquely produced (i.e terribly), lyrics which were infantile but in a fascinating way (like Hetfield had been reduced to absolute vulnerability), and had a lot of genuine heart and soul. Nothing was phoned in on autopilot because, by God, who on earth would phone shit like that in?
Death Magnetic on the other hand had 2 awesome tracks, 1 good one, 1 'One' and 'Fade to Black' rip-off, and 5 generic slabs of Metallica trying to play like they think their 'old school' fans want them to play. It was dull and mechanical. Oh, and terribly produced, but not in an interesting way like St Anger or And Justice For All were.
This new album has good production by the way, forgot to mention that.
