How is the HTC vive working out?

What is the best part about it?
What is your favourite thing to use it for that is most surprising?
Does looking over the edge of a cliff in a game feel as though you might actually fall?
What is your favourite game to play in VR?
Have you used it to watch VR porn?
Will you be buying the next version?

@OP

> How is the HTC vive working out?
Pretty good, though I haven't played in about a week. I'll get more into it but when busy it is hard to get into, because playing a VR game means having to become fully immersed for the duration of the gameplay, so no checking on email and quickly writing a response or anything like that.

> What is the best part about it?
The immersion and the feeling of scale. Even though the resolution is slightly crappy, it is really immersive. And you feel like you are there, after having gotten used to the resolution which happens in a few minutes. Scale suddenly means something. There is a virtual reality mod for minecraft and every block is 1x1 meter. That is fucking huge. Digging out a little cave turns out to be larger than the room I am standing in, and it feels rather large. I am sure it would be even more incredible if I actually enjoyed playing minecraft still, especially for exploring epic builds.

Other games are also good at getting you immersed. I played the budget cuts demos, and at some point you get into the space above a ceiling and there is a hole you need to get out, and the game has you crouching at that point. So what do you do? You try to peek out the hole, and that means booping your face into the floor irl. It looks ridiculous and makes you feel retarded, but it did happen to me and to a bunch of other people on /r/vive as well.

I haven't really tried any of the VR "experiences" yet, just games. But I'm sure there are some incredible ones.

> What is your favourite thing to use it for that is most surprising?
Fruit Ninja. I always hated those kind of games on tablets or whatever, but it's fucking incredible in VR. Playing with swords is fun I guess. There's also ZenBlade which is more realistic (such as your swords not being able to collide, and the sword only having one cutting edge) but because of that also a bit less fun to play.

> Does looking over the edge of a cliff in a game feel as though you might actually fall?
Yep. And you will want to not make that step forward. Of course I have done that in every game to find out what happens. Most games do in fact kill you for it.

> What is your favourite game to play in VR?
Rec Room. It's currently free (meaning every vive owner will own this game) and basically has all kinds of group games. There's a kind of tennis, dodgeball, table tennis, and fucking paintball. The paintball is a blast. I also like space pirate trainer, but it's basically just a simple shooter. There's also vanishing realms which is an RPG. Very fun to play, even though it has a shit story. And is utterly unfinished and ends when you feel the story is just getting started. But it does show that RPGs in VR could be so, so good.

> Have you used it to watch VR porn?
No. I also do not see how this would be appealing. If any VR porn does actually exist I'm sure your vision would be stuck in place, with being able to look around from that spot.

> Will you be buying the next version?
Don't know. It really depends on how expensive it will be, and what the reasons for upgrading are. The upcoming revision coming out likely just has sturdier straps and stuff like that, with no reason to upgrade to it. If it's about the tech moving forward, only if the resolution becomes much better than it currently is. That is the only real downside there is right now with the headset. Also, I would wait longer before buying, there are just not enough quality games out there currently.

If anyone is wondering about getting one, I wouldn't yet recommend it. There's quality tech demos and the games that do exist are fun, but not that many games exist. Nearly everything is very early access with just one or two developers working on things. If Fallout 4 VR happens, though...

I don't think I'll be getting a VR device for a very long time, but this still mildly interests me.

Fallout 4's world is big and detailed enough that it would really benefit from a VR perspective, IMO.

Oh I should mention, the Destinations "game" is also awesome. It allows people to upload "destinations" which can be computer generated models of rooms/locations, or places that have been 3d scanned. There's a bunch of official 3d scans of neat places. I haven't looked around much there yet, but I can see that going places.

I wonder how VR Fallout would work in practice. You can't exactly walk further than whatever space you have in a regular sized room, so it would have to incorporate some kind of teleportation like other VR games do. I too won't get a VR headset for yonks, but VR Fo4 is the kind of thing that would definitely tempt me.

Most games do have short range teleportation, or movement when you touch the touchpad on one of the controllers, which are basically the touchpads from the steam controller. The problem with that is that vision of movement becomes detached from actual movement, which causes a form of motion sickness in some people. It doesn't with me, but that is why the teleportation is a thing. Some games also implement the teleportation as 'dashing', which I think would work fine for FO4 combined with giving the option of touchpad movement.

Thanks for that, I'll wait before buying one. From what you are saying it seems like the sort of thing that is great for a friend to own, and you just play on it occasionally when you visit them.

@previous (r04r)
I've always thought that every game should have a jetpack. Now it seems like a practical solution to VR movement.

Yes, I'm sure you can get most of the current experience from that.

> I've always thought that every game should have a jetpack. Now it seems like a practical solution to VR movement.
I have not yet seen jetpacks in VR! Patent this asap.

Also, I should mention that HTC is apparently rather bad with returns/repairs. At least according to reddit, I haven't had need of their services (yet). So that is another consideration, do not buy directly from them if you have the chance. Resellers are starting to pop up now, and if it's a reliable one you're probably better off there.

Is it true that the headset is somewhat modular and theoretically could most repairs be undertaken by the average user?

No, I don't think so. Absolutely not. Possibly part replacements if they shipped those, but they do not. I also do not see a way to in fact remove any part of the headset, but there are probably non-obvious ways to open it up.

But the part that's most likely to get damaged is the lenses, and there is just no repairing those. And since I haven't heard of replacement lenses being on sale I don't think so. There is https://vr-lens-lab.com/ but those are insets that you snap in place in front of the actual lens.

I haven't really experienced any modularity other than the straps, the face cushion and nose cover.

What are the hand controls like? You could pretty much lean steer and use left and right triggers for thruster control for some acrobatic shit right?

FO4? Jetpacks.
Minecraft? Jetpacks.
Vanishing Realms? Magical Jetpacks
Destination? Jetpacks.
Fruit Ninja? Maybe not...
