Delta just called me to cancel my flight - A LIVE Real person with apologies and they booked me at the only available flight a KLM double hop with huggggeeee layover
The KLM flight I wanted is totally booked and it had a short state side stop so it was almost a direct LAX to Johannesburg which puts me close enough to Botswana. The only alternative that Delta could do for me is this wayyyyyyy to much time KLM double hop. Fails because I cannot connect up with the Alcatel Engineers who have to move on to Russia.
As an Engineer I decided to look up what shut down all of Delta this week and much is still shut down with planes in wrong places.
That explanation sucks re no tech info as to Y
reports are saying that a switchgear failed to transfer (utility power went down and the switch didn't transfer to generator), which resulted in a large portion of electrical equipment to go down. these switchgears can be up to 3000 amps to 5000 amps, so that's a lot of load going through there.

What people don't understand is that in a situation like this, heavy duty electrical equipment does not like to be completely shut down. when equipment has been running with high loads gets shuts down, components fail more often than not. and if something as large as a switchgear went down, then that means there was a lot of downstream equipment that went unpowered. and usually the components that fail aren't kept in stock at the site because it has to be replaced/installed/repaired by the vendor/manufacturer.
So trip called OFF -

"Monday morning a critical power control module at our Technology Command Center malfunctioned, causing a surge to the transformer and a loss of power," Delta COO Gil West said in a statement on Tuesday. "The universal power was stabilized and power was restored quickly."
However, the trouble obviously didn't end there. A Delta spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider earlier today that the airline's backup systems failed to kick in.
West went into detail on why the airlines backup systems didn't function properly.
"Critical systems and network equipment didn’t switch over to backups. Other systems did," West said. "And now we’re seeing instability in these systems."
As a result, the airline is seeing, "slowness in the system that airport customer service agents use to process check-ins, conduct boarding and dispatch aircraft," West added.
However, the trouble obviously didn't end there. A Delta spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider earlier today that the airline's backup systems failed to kick in.
West went into detail on why the airlines backup systems didn't function properly.
"Critical systems and network equipment didn’t switch over to backups. Other systems did," West said. "And now we’re seeing instability in these systems."
As a result, the airline is seeing, "slowness in the system that airport customer service agents use to process check-ins, conduct boarding and dispatch aircraft," West added.
In addition, the cancelled and delayed flights have also wreaked havoc on the airline's crew and fleet schedules. Thus, further delays and cancellations have been caused by scheduling difficulties.
When Delta doesn’t fly aircraft, not only do customers not get to their destination, but flight crews don’t get to where they are scheduled to be. When this happens, unfortunately, further delays and cancellations result. And flight crews can only be on duty for a limited time before rest periods are required by law.
Flight crews – pilots and flight attendants – carry out their responsibilities in a rotation, a schedule of flights and hotel reservations, that is usually three or four days.
As cancellations occur, rotations become invalid. Multiplied across tens of thousands of pilots and flight attendants and thousands of scheduled flights, rebuilding rotations is a time-consuming process.
And keeping safety top of mind is a constant in our actions, and especially while we’re running our operation in recovery mode and making sure flight crews on duty have all they need to operate a safe flight, especially consistent delivery of information.
When Delta doesn’t fly aircraft, not only do customers not get to their destination, but flight crews don’t get to where they are scheduled to be. When this happens, unfortunately, further delays and cancellations result. And flight crews can only be on duty for a limited time before rest periods are required by law.

The local utility Georgia Power says the failure was caused by a failed Delta "switchgear" at its Atlanta data center — that's a piece of equipment that connects Delta's computers to the power grid and to the company's backup generators, according to Bob Mann, a former airline executive who is now an aviation consultant.

Ah i totally spaced, our employer wanted us out by saturday so we found a ride to northern California and we plan on spending the next month or so tooling around oregon
We got an invite back to work any time, so i will keep you informed of future visits.

Damn I love the Oregon coast. Multiple times I backpacked up the coast. With a tide table one can sleep on beach along the way OR with tides UP just go up the Redwood and black berry covered bluffs and hang out there. Does even in August drip lots of wet from Trees in the morning so one has issues sleeping in - Need carry very little cause there are stores along the Hwy

Its actually one of two trips called off - First was plans to re-up my Certificate in Kazakhstan but I could NOT get anyone else to do that trip with me so the class got called OFF
They will do a one on one but I NEED to fall asleep during that class and one on one no work for me - I passed the test online already but rules are I must take the fucking class - At least a client pays for but Kazakhstan? Not my cup of tea
Botswana is ok - been there much - One does get to see lots of wild stuff out n about and the Globalstar site is very remote and inviting to such that one has to have a couple of people with guns - More to fire loud warning shots as kill is NOT an option in that location - I do not do well in locations where I cannot do my daily run and running in Botswana? Running with animals that are hungry and want to eat?
But I once just once did walk for hours with a Mountain Lion - Yep for real - I am blessed to have a few amazing and couple of death threatening events in my long life - Yet fact to face with a Rattlesnake coiled with my nose next to its FANGS - Doing something so stupid but must have been the Goddess's in Heaven that saved my ass that day and the Mountain Lion in Sequoia National Park
a BLESSED Adventure and yes I was afraid very afraid
Oh and the Bear coming directly towards me as I lay in my sleeping bag with Ice Chest as my head rest - I must have passed out - So much for jars of jams all broken from tossed chest
