oh man, the i76900 is looking like a beast. it's considerably more expensive than the 6700k, but it's quite a bit less than the flagship 6950my shit is getting on to be 5 years old now. i'm even seeing some performance issues. ever since i upgraded to a 2560x1440 monitor i haven't been able to push that resolution at 144hz in all games. some games run under 90 FPS even, and i'm not always able to run ultramax settings.
it's time. this computer has been a real fucking trooper through the years, and it'll have a second life as a replacement for my work computer which is crapping out. pretty much i think i'm going to be just building a new computer, lol. i'll pretty much need to buy new everything since i just gave away all my spare parts. i will be needing a new case to do water cooling anyway, so i guess the added expense will be a power supply and a hard drive. but, i was planning on installing m.2 anyway so i guess really all i did was cost me a power supply. oh yeah, and i gave away my gtx 570 when i built that all out, so i'll need to get a new video card.
the question there is whether or not i should just get an inexpensive one for work and re-use my 980 in the future build, or buy a 980ti for the future computer and just say fuck it and build a full on brand new system.
it would be very fucking nice to have a nicer video card at work. we use Corel for a lot of stuff (i fucking hate corel btw) and they buy cheap computers which run like shit. there's only one that can run it well, and there's always someone using it and i have to wait or spend endless hours being frustrated with laggy ass image editing.
decisions, decisions.
anyway, i'm glad i waited for broadwell e, i still think the 6700k would be future proof enough to get me 5 years, but the 6900k is most likely at least that.

that's the 10 core. it's a 50% price increase for like a 20% increase or something like that. over the others at least. there's also some 6 core versions, the 6850 and 6800(i think) which are more closely priced to the 6700k. i'm really not done looking into what's available. the 6 cores might be a good option, the 6850 has a nice clock speed. i've read that in the new era of API 6 core may be more optimal than 8 core. diminishing returns and whatnot. and if i go 6 core then i won't feel as bad about buying a 980ti if i decide to do that.

time to revisit this subject. i've pretty much decided between the 6800k and the 6850k. they are both 6 core chips, and are within 200ghz of each other in stock clock speed. the biggest difference it seems is the number of pci express lanes. the 6800k has 28 and the 6850k has 40. so it's the difference between doing a single graphics card build or SLI. it's probably also the difference between a micro itx build and standard atx. i'd definately want to do a standard atx mid tower sized build if i go with the 6850, otherwise i'm just buying it for the extra 200ghz and wasting the additional pci express lanes. if i go with the micro itx form factor then the 6800 would be the more sane choice. but, that does limit me on motherboard since there's really not many choices in high end itx 2011 motherboards. those motherboards also lack some bells and whistles. so probably my dream of a beastly yet tiny computer with a handle on it is going to remain a dream for now.

@previous (Dr.Spock)been looking at a couple of things. the asus x99 is all around pretty slick. when i was looking at doing a 6700k build last year i was thinking about the z170 version which was also white. i was also kinda wanting to do a white themed build. but the white cases either look super retarded or were built kinda cheaply. corsair had a couple i liked, but again the case was not impressive in person and the one i really liked doesn't fit what i want to do, so.
i think the x99 would look fine in the inwin case, but there are a couple of others that might look better. i've had really outstanding luck with this current asus motherboard i've got, so i've got no reason to move away from asus except for aesthetics.

@727,156 (dw)well, i have a couple of other choices. the Asrock x99 would probably best fit the aesthetics of the case since i went with the gold one. it's actually about a hundred bucks less than the asus. not sure what the differences are exactly. i've got a dude i've been buying hardware from for years up at microcenter and i'm going to go get his opinion about it today. i've heard Asrock isn't bad, but also that it's a "cheaper asus." one thing it doesn't have are LEDs all over the chipset and junk like that. i'm actually not super happy with the current x99 boards available, almost every single one is awful looking gamer gear with rainbow leds and GAMING GOD glowing on the IO cover. i can't help but think a big part of the price difference is just in LEDs alone.
but, not sure how asrock stacks up against the others. i've bought asus for a few years now and i've heard that gigabyte is actually one of the top manufacturers now. if i'm not mistaken they were crap back in the day. and apparently MSI now has a rep for making flashy gamer gear over quality hardware. at least asus is still highly rated, but i'm surprised to find out a lot of people put gigabyte over asus. so, that means i need to check out asrock too and figure out what the hierarchy of qualities looks like these days. if asrock is actually pretty good, then i might end up with this one. no glowing LEDS, no queer ass gaming god bullshit, and it matches the gold strip on my new case.

yeah, the tube does look bad. idk about the tray. on the other inwin cases they generally had some kind of little support arm to help hold a stack of GPUs in SLI, it may be for that. may just be for looks.

@727,173 (dw)i also think rigid tubing looks better than hoses. and it'll always look best with the video card looped in similarly. i'll be starting the same way, water cooler on the CPU and aircooled GPU, but next year when i upgrade the graphics card i'll but the cooling system and build it out with a fully custom cooling loop at that time.

Die shrink + tweaks. Skylake brought further improvements. All in all, nothing radical happened and you can't go wrong with whatever you pick from the 14nm series.

ah, gotcha. i know skylake has been reviewed excellently for gaming and stuff, and i've heard it's the first absolute upgrade from vintage sandy bridge processors. previous cpus just didn't show a significant enough improvement, but that skylake all around is a big jump. any chip i go with from here on out is going to be a worthwhile upgrade. i'm also told that the 6850 specifically is just a great flagship level of cpu as well. the next steps up hit serious diminishing returns making the 6850 the best bang for your buck at that level of processor. and the performance gains are marginal at the highest end. it's also been getting some right decent OC speeds making it at least comparable to the i76700k quad core at stock speeds. the 6700k will always be faster under OC in single core applications though.

went and talked to my guy up at microcenter and learned a couple of things. in his opinion asus isn't necessarily at the top anymore. they still make the premier motherboard for overclocking, but they've had some QC problems with some components (which have been resolved) in the first x99 boards, and their customer support is still considered bad. no glaring problems with asus, but because of problems in their 6th gen asus has lost top slot to probably Gigabyte. MSI does make a great board, in his opinion, and claims they make gamer gear are true but also that it's really pretty good gamer gear. we talked about Asrock and he said it's not crap anymore. at one time they made an undeniably inferior product, but the current boards they are making are on par with Asus, Gigabyte and MSI. the caveat being that the Asrock boards don't have any aesthetic fluff. it has a complete lack of LEDs save the on-board power button. that kinda stuff is never free, there's always a cost involved, and it kinda seems like the biggest difference between a $600 motherboard and a $300 motherboard are aesthetics. at least in the x99 series. that being said, the Asrock x99 is a 5th generation motherboard and the others i'm looking at are 6th generation motherboards. that could be a problem, evidently, since the 6850k is a 6th gen chip and the Asrock will need a bios update which i might not be able to do without a 5th gen chip installed first. but, running a 6850k in the Asrock would not lose me anything, the 6th gen boards aren't that much different. i didn't ask, but i'm wondering if i can get the tech dept at microcenter to update the bios for me when i buy it so i can get the 6th gen CPU installed without a problem. need to figure out what the solution is there before i buy anything, or, i need to just pick a 6th gen motherboard.
after looking at some other options, the asus rampage V is probably the next best choice style wise. it's of course covered in LEDs - the whole southbridge heatsick glows and the republic of gamer(z) glows - but at least i can just make it white. but, it's RGB leds so it can look super tacky. it's also at the top end of the price scale. you pretty much have to go to server hardware to find a pricier motherboard. it's on sale if i bundle with a CPU, so it would drop to 450 or something like that, not too much more than the asus x99 deluxe 2 i was looking at previously.
oh yeah, the other price increase on these boards is stuff like on-board wi-fi. everything except for the Asrock comes with either a PCI wi-fi adapter thing, or in some cases a fully on-board wi-fi adapter with external antennae. and the Rampage V comes with a desk mounted control box for headphones... asus is pretty proud of their on-board sound hardware i guess. anyway, i'm not interested in wi-fi on this machine, it'll be - and always will be - on a wired connection. i also have wireless headphones that has it's own desk mounted control box with volume knob and all that... so the rampage V stuff would get left in the box. so between the extra stuff i'll never use and the LEDs that i don't appreciate i'm really hoping the Asrock won't be a problem when doing a new installation with a 6850k.
i'm still undecided, but i'm almost really wanting that Asrock board to win out. it'll match my case, it meets my aesthetic criteria of being gaudy without being attention grabbing, and i won't be paying for stuff i'm absolutely not going to be using.

oh yeah, and the rampage boards are the newest version of the series of motherboard i've got right now. it's been an outstanding motherboard and it overclocks super duper easily. so i won't have any reservations about the rampage series of board since i'm planning on overclocking again.

hmmm, if asrock is to be believed then the 6850k is supported by the x99 OC Formula... i haven't come across anything online so far that would tell me i can't do a new install with the 6850k on the asrock board. i'm going to see about emailing them and asking. check their support out real quick :p

i guess i interpret this to mean it should be fine to do a fresh installation of a 6850 onto their MB and they can send me the bios. this is good news, i think, but they're a little light on the specifics i guess. i'll follow up again with microcenter and see if they can flash the bios at the store when i buy it. they've got a tech department. i'd prefer to do it myself but i'm not sure about the procedure here. if the 6850 won't work without a new bios, and i need to boot the PC to be able to do that, then how do i go about flashing the MB if the bios doesn't post? these are questions that are over my head, i'll need to figure out what the steps are. hopefully i can just boot into the bios and flash it without problems? i was hoping for a bit more detail, but, since i've not spent any money with them i'm not shocked they didn't spend much time on details. if i send them a purchase order maybe they'll give better instruction.We can mail you the bios, once you completed the invoice order from m/b seller.

more good news for me too! i can hold off on buying a new power supply. the 6850k draws 140w at peak, and my current 2600k draws a little over 120, i've got plenty of overhead to cover 20 watts with my 500w PS. i probably won't need to replace that until i've got 2 video cards in SLI. i doubt the water cooler will draw much more than all the fans i've got running in my current case, i guess i should double check that. but i've got like 200 watts or so overhead. so i'm optimistic. looks like all i'll really need is the motherboard, the CPU, and new ddr4 memory and i'll be ready to go.

it's actually needless complexity, there are some really great air coolers out there that perform as well as any production water cooling all-in-one thing. Noctua comes to mind. to do a custom water cooled PC build is purely aesthetics and for the fun of it. i'll have to be okay with risking losing components. i don't have any experience with building water cooled pcs, so i'm reading up on it and learning about it now. hopefully by the time i'm ready to build it out i'll only lack practical experience. i'll still have my 2600 and a huge computer case, i could think about buying a water block for that cpu and building out a simple custom loop with the parts i'll eventually want in the inwin. i can experiment with copper tubing and won't be risking nearly as much, i can even run it without a graphics card to minimize potential loss. it doesn't look super hard, but there's plenty to fuck up i'm sure.
but yeah. long way for me to say yes, i have reservations. i might even install my 2600 build into the inwin and test the water cooler before i even install a new motherboard and CPU. it's brand new in a box, but i got it as a gift a year and a half ago. i haven't been able to install it since my current case won't mount a corsair cooler for some fucking reason. i'm sure it's fine, but i think i still might want to test it before i heat up anything expensive.

Noctua comes to mind. to do a custom water cooled PC build is purely aesthetics and for the fun of it. i'll have to be okay with risking losing components. i don't have any experience with building water cooled pcs, so i'm reading up on it and learning about it now. hopefully by the time i'm ready to build it out i'll only lack practical experience. i'll still have my 2600 and a huge computer case, i could think about buying a water block for that cpu and building out a simple custom loop with the parts i'll eventually want in the inwin. i can experiment with copper tubing and won't be risking nearly as much, i can even run it without a graphics card to minimize potential loss. it doesn't look super hard, but there's plenty to fuck up i'm sure.
but yeah. long way for me to say yes, i have reservations. i might even install my 2600 build into the inwin and test the water cooler before i even install a new motherboard and CPU. it's brand new in a box, but i got it as a gift a year and a half ago. i haven't been able to install it since my current case won't mount a corsair cooler for some fucking reason. i'm sure it's fine, but i think i still might want to test it before i heat up anything expensive.

oh yeah, y'all might find this awesome. i'm absolutely not going to do it, but i totally could do it. but i'm not. i'm not.but was talking to a couple of the guys at work and talking about how to finish out the copper tubing, my plan is pretty much to do a brushed finish, which is super easy to do you just use steel wool and swipe the length of it till it's even. then lacquer them to prevent oxidation over time. but they told me to have them gold plated. gold doesn't tarnish, afterall. they were serious, too, and it's actually not as expensive as you might imagine. we occasionally have things plated in a variety of metals, but i mean it's still not cheap. also it would be super high polish and brushed copper looks pretty damn close to brushed gold. but... if we need to have any gold plating done then i could potentially slip in some copper tubing and get it done for practically nothing. if i wanted nickel plating or chrome they could get that done for me like this week. oh yeah, or brass. brass would be the way to go for plating anyway. but i think a brushed copper with a clear coat will look just dandy. that and black fittings...

got a quote. gold plating about 3 feet of copper pipe would run in the neighborhood of 60 bucks. lol. i'm totally doing it. funny part was, they didn't even ask what it was for. i just asked for a quote on plating 3 feet of 1/2 copper tubing cut into 1 foot sections and they were like, "probably 20 bucks per tube." i didn't even ask about any other finishes, they'll all be cheaper than gold plating. i mentioned this to my brother and he suggested if i actually gold plate the fucking tubes then i should have the mounting screws for the motherboard gold plated as well.

my new case arrived today! it looks awesome. the gold is really, really close to the gold on the Asrock MB. i went ahead and pulled the drive bay since i won't be using it, and it's just got a ton of room inside. i'm very happy with the build quality too, there's not a bit of plastic anywhere, the whole thing is either aluminum or glass. actually that's not entirely true, the feet are molded plastic, but that's it. they're a pretty simple shape, too. i had to pull one to remove the drive bay and one of the guys at work suggested we remake them out of some discard materials at work. we've got a bunch of cut offs and he estimated it would take ME something like 3 or 4 hours to make 2 of them. i'd be braising together copper plate, which i've never done before. i've done a lot of soldering, and welding funny enough, but i've never braised copper. so that might be fun. it might also be too much gold since there's already a lot of that color planned. also the gold on the case is brushed and gold colored, not actually gold plated, so having literal gold plated or polished brass feet might not match well enough to look good. we'll see. i'm already very happy with the case.
so tomorrow i make for microcenter for one final conversation with my hardware guy about water cooling and then buy parts to get this build started. yee haw.

okay, got just about everything i needed. turns out i couldn't ever get a hard yes on the 6850 issue on the asrock board. after mulling it over with the guys at microcenter (they didn't have a gen 5 chip in back to install and flash the bios with) we decided the best way to get this done today would be for me to buy a 5820, flash the bios with that chip in the socket, and then exchange it for the 6850k after that's done, then finish the installation with the newer processor. so that's what we did. i'll have to make another trip up there tonight to finish this thing out, but this is the plan.

okay, got the bios on a thumb drive. ready to do this. i'll take some pictures since i'll be very slightly modding things as i go. i bought a couple of noctua fans to install onto the water cooler, and those fans will be moved onto the bottom of the case. i guess aside from that it's going to be a straight forward install. i did go ahead and decide to pick up an m.2 ssd, i'll have plenty of pci lanes. anyway. about to deboot this 2600k for the last time in it's current state. i need the power supply.

2600k is gutted ;(about to transplant the power supply. it's 750w, derp. it's more than sufficient. then doing the cooler fans. the psu isn't modular unfortunately, so i'm stuck with that squid for the immediate future.
you can see some of the old jusk i pulled out to help test, old monitor, keyboard and mouse. i have a ton of really old junk. like a soundblaster card from the early 2000s and an old motherboard with a pentium 2 dual core something or other. zip drives. lol.

booted. runs just fine, the water cooler is doing great. 30 degrees cooler than my air cooled build. the new fans are in a pull configuration, but i'm going to put them into push and hide them behind the radiator. still need to pull the cpu and exchange it for the 6850, didn't get the bios flashed in time. messed around with the radiator too long. going ahead and installing drivers and all that. seems to be purring along like a kitten. super quiet too. the noctua fans are virtually silent. all i can hear is the gpu cooler and the cheap case fan in win sent. definately going to be replacing that. the 2 corsair fans that came with the cooler are going to replace case fans in the 2600k build. the fans on that have bad bearings and rattle and are quite annoying.
so it's getting a bit of attention too. going to take it to work just as soon as i canibalize everything i need.
edit: i haven't even spent a minute doing cable management. looks like shit, but it's all getting pulled when i yank the cpu out. but cables will be hidden as much as they can be. really do need a modular psu...

finished for the day. i installed a few things and let it run for a few hours. everything seems to be in good shape. i went ahead and pulled the cpu and cleaned it up and got it repackaged for exchange. i pulled the radiator out and hid the fans in front of it. it looks much neater. i mounted a fan on the bottom of the case beneath the video card as well.
now all i have to do is swap out for the 6850k and come up with a plan for wiring. i may go ahead and buy a modular psu tomorrow also. i'll at least look at them. that and tools to do custom wiring harnesses. it's not hard, microcenter sells all the plugs and fitting and wires you could need. that and special tools to squeeze some together or something. i'm sure a modular psu will come with a ton of removable wires, but it'd be nice to just have everything exactly where i want it. extensions are great, but custom wiring is so much more tidy.
that's something i can fuck with while i wait to do custom water cooling in this build. that and lighting. i forgot i wanted a couple of led strips.

i think so, the big white plugs are for hdd and optical drive 12v power. the splitter i got was basically a pass through type with a 3 pin adapter coming off. looke at the connector for the led and see if it's 3 or 4 pins, probably 3 pin. the lights may also say somewhere what voltage they use. like the wires are sometimes marked. i'd guess 12v, just becuase i've wired leds at work up to 12v wall warts, but it did need a resistor.

got the exchange done. i love microcenter. no problems at all. i also got a modular psu. we talked custom wiring, and dude just said it's super tedious. he buys his harnesses premade online. also microcenter doesn't actually carry parts for custom wiring anymore. Altex does though, they are a local parts house for commercial stuff. they display and sell server racks and refidgeration units among other things. if you're going to be building out a 50 computer network altex would be the place to go to buy bulk everything. so that's where i can get parts for that. the corsair wiring doesn't look bad at all, and since i can unplug everything i'm not using it'll be much tidier. we'll see if i even want it still after i get this thing wired up.

practically finished. the new psu is installed, and the cable nightmare is over. still need to bundle up the back side and neatly pin it all down, but the inside is workable. i do need a couple of extensions for the fans on the radiator. also, i'm running a full 24w to the cpu, which is great. this is going to have a very stable overclock, and i can even shove another 12v down its throat for even higher reliability. but i can't imagine needing it. but this psu is great.the cpu is running cooler than i thought too. the bios had it idle at 40, but it's down to 25 at idle in windows. i'll kinda test it under load when i start benchmarking.
playing with the lighting too. looks okay. i only got one rgb strip to see what color i want and i kinda have it tucked behind the front panel. it's not mounted yet though. probably need 2 to really fill the grate up with backlight.

cable management first pass. still need to plug in the headers. the bottom is a bit of a mess with extra y-splitters daisy chained into an extension. the led light wiring is just kinda tossed down there too. i'll be needing to rewire that, it's stupid. the actual power cable is 2" long, i'll be soldering in an extension and sleeving it so the sata power cable can remain hidden. but this is tidy enough for now. i can actually put the back on now.(Edited 1 minute later.)

i'm thinking about spray painting the screws on the psu gold. there's a bunch of nice metallic paints now, and it would be rediculous to have anything gold plated. except for the actual copper tubing of course, but spray paint would be able to get anything else there. i think gold screws may look nice, that would be easy and reversable if it looks too tacky. it's got a grill on the fan too that could be painted. but that may be too much. anymore gold should be a subtle highlight i think. too much and it'll just look bad. the asrock board already brings a huge splash.

the lighting is coming along i added another 60cm strip and it's filling up the front pretty good now. needs a bit more at the bottom, but the case will need 2 very tiny mods first. i want the strips to be hidden, the radiator totally covers the top, but the bottom is open and the leds are blinding when you look at them directly. so i need to make an L shaped blinder to mount next to the strip. maybe a full cover for the bottom section even. i think it already looks pretty good, but it's trimmed only about 90 percent. the mid case uder the card is dark too. a small strip up the back by the pci card will fix that. it's dark at the top by the cpu as well. i can either run a strip up there across the top edge or get a 120mm exhaust fan with an led ring that looks pretty nice. that would light up the top just as well. decisions decisions.Jubilee Starshine triple-posted this 10 years ago, 6 minutes later, 2 months after the original post[^] [v] #728,556

did some light benchmarking to see how it compares to my previous motherboard and cpu. the gains were about what was expected. not a huge improvement in FPS but a massive improvement in physics processing and, uh, video throughput. so this is where i get kinda lost on what exactly is happening, because the graphics experience is oddly improved without much increase in frame rate. i believe it's frame lag that determines stuttering or something like that, but it's where the GPU displays 1, uh, frame i guess over more than one frame. it's not the same as stuttering you get with low FPS, because it's a stuttering that you can see even at higher frame rates. it was an issue i was noticing in a few games with graphics all the way up, i had 60fps easy but it still seemed to have an odd stutter periodically. i think that was a CPU bottleneck, because the 6850k with the same clock speed and using the same GPU pushes a much smoother picture. the added frames were certainly nice, but the lack of stutter during the benchmark was striking.
also the physics score was doubled. the 6850 handily destroys the 2600 at physics and multi-threading.
pretty pleased with how it's running Battlefield 1. with max settings at 2560x1440 i was averaging in the high 50s FPS wise. at 1920x1080 it's in the 90s. both are pretty acceptable, and will only improve as the game is patched and optimized. well, slightly improved.
