I've heard of them being used on Tor for "illegitimate" purposes but outside of that I see no use for them. Is there any business that actually accepts these things as payment?

There are many uses for them.
- You can transfer money to anyone without having to deal with banks. No fees!
- No one can seize your assets.
- No country (or anyone) controls Bitcoins so no one can just print a lot more and inflate the currency.
- It's anonymous.
Yes, it's ideal for illegitimate stuff. On the other hand it takes the power out of the government, which some people might like. It's convenient.
And yes, some legitimate businesses accept Bitcoins. You can buy socks with them!
