at work today one of our contractors (a black guy) was saying that 99% of black shootings are done by other blacks. he seemed to be aware that black-on-black violence was the worst of the violence, but he also suggested that cops should "shoot to disarm/disable rather than kill." i said, "that's what nonlethal weapons like tasers and batons are for, guns are called lethal force for a reason. you don't use lethal force to disarm or disable, if they're resorting to a gun then the officer has already made the determination that nothing short of lethal force (i.e. death) will work. they aren't trained to 'shoot to disable,' they are trained to 'shoot to kill.' if it's gotten that far then 'disarming/disabling' isn't what's happening anymore. they are killing, and all that matters is if they are justified, and more often than not they are." when they're not it's called murder and the cop goes to jail, when it IS it's called reasonable use of force.
idk, it just seemed a weird position that he had. he recognized that blacks are disproportionately violent towards even one another, but still thinks cops are the ones making the mistakes? it's just weird. it's like he can see it but refuses to acknowledge it, violence comes from within the community, but it's not a community problem? it's white people and cops?

What's the problem with shooting to disable though? Shooting in the knee seems to solve most problems about unneccessary violence.

It's not the American way. American police are not very well trained, and most have too fat fingers to properly handle a firearm. They are thus trained to aim for center mass and to murder the people they point their firearm at. The idea is that this reduces the potential harm of the police officer, since a dead man can do no harm. But someone with a shot to hell leg might still manage to aim a firearm at the officer.
Also, shots to practically anywhere can be pretty fatal I think, it just takes a bit longer.

becuase guns are lethal? you should only use them for that purpose. also, have you ever fired a pistol? any idea how hard it is to hit a very small target in an extreme situation? it's hard enough hitting paper targets, tbh.
the world isn't a movie and no one is sniping knee caps. this is real life, and lethal force shouldn't be used like a trick-shot. "ima shoot the gun outta his hand."
no you're not. you're going to miss your shot and get killed being stupid. guns are for killing. period.

So don't have guns then. If they only exist to kill people they should only be used in situations with armed suspects.
There is a difference between aiming for the torso or knee and missing and just going for a kill.

> So don't have guns then. If they only exist to kill people they should only be used in situations with armed suspects.
yeah. that's pretty much how they do it, dude. they use lethal force when their lives are in immediate danger. that's what i mean what i say legal use of lethal force. do you think american cops are just going around braining people instead of subduing them? lethal force is a last resort option, and that's how it's used. otherwise it's called murder, and police are tried for murder when they murder people. basically they've already tried everything else they can try (think nonlethal methods of subduing someone) and they are left with no other option because their lives are in danger.
> There is a difference between aiming for the torso or knee and missing and just going for a kill.
that's exactly correct, aiming for the knee is fucking stupid. if your life is in danger don't fuck around, you kill them first. police are allowed to defend their lives in self defense, and that's what we're talking about in 99% of these cases. if a dude is lumbering at you with a knife in hand, you're not going to pull out a knife and say, "fair and square, let's do this." you're going to pull out your gun and shoot them in the chest.
guns aren't toys. guns aren't to be used as intimidation, as warnings, or as as anything other than lethal force. if a cop pulls his gun it IS so they can use it to kill. anything else is an improper use of that weapon. there are tons of other non-lethal weapons that cops already carry, batons, pepper spray, tazers, so it's not like GUN is their only choice. it's only one tool they carry and it has a very specific use, to protect the officers life in a life threatening situation.
otherwise, dude, it's a crime. and we do prosecute those crimes. stop acting like guns are anything other than a lethal tool used to administer death. cops have plenty of other options (hell, just kick their ass, happens a lot tbh) for non-lethal force with the situation doesn't call for more than that.

fake gun, real gun, the cops don't know which it is until after the fact. it's easy to say in hindsight that the gun was a toy and point to it and say the cops made a mistake. but when it happened how were they supppsed to know it wasn't real? if you're guessing you assume it's real, becuase assuming it can't kill you is dangerous and stupid.

I'm anti-guns and all, but this whole "cops are bad/incompetent for not trying to shoot to disable" thing does sound a bit silly.
If a cop's drawing a gun, they're probably don't feel they're in a position to mess about with trick shots. Aiming for the centre mass gives the best chance of getting a hit, just aiming for the leg or arm or whatever could result in a miss, giving the assailant time to get in close or return fire.

never said he deserved it, dude. it's a sad and unfortunate series of events that ended in the loss of a young life, and it could have been avoided in more than one way. but, the cops did not act recklessly. they acted in self defense, and it was only after the fact that the truth was evident. the kid didn't deserve to die, but the situation he was in demanded it.
again, the whole thing was avoidable and it starts with parental responsibility. mistakes were made on everyone's part, and it was an unfortunate accident. but it was ultimately avoidable well before police even arrived.

maybe it's just perception and the media treating every local event like national news. the new generation of parents are being called worse than helicopter parents of the early 2000s becuase of the 100% curation of every minute of every day coupled with kids having a smaller footprint than ever while growing up.
when i was a kid we rode bikes 10 miles from home. my nephews and neices are lucky if they play down the block. well, it's their choice, they choose to stay home and do most social stuff online, but their physical footprint is much smaller. anyway, combined with ultra helicoptering they are pretty much supervised 100% of the time. but, they are also all under 16, so, they should have lot of supervision. the 16 year old has as much freedom as we did growing up, but also he was old enough to be responsible and was taught how to interact with authority. if a cop were to tell him to drop something he wouldn't point it at them. he'd drop it. so he goes unsupervised often, of course, like i said, he's old enough to care for himself and stay out of danger.
his 9 year old brother though? yeah, no... he's far too young and far too opositional with authority to be allowed outdoors without realistic toy guns and be alone. he does ride his bike around the block by himself or with friends sometime. and he does have realistic toy guns, and they are inside toys and he's the first to say that.
