Topic: i built a computer from spare parts i had laying around
squeegee started this discussion 9 years ago#53,777
the case is from 2001 or so. super old, but a full tower with lots of fans. most everything is 5+ years old like the 500 watt PSU and 12 year old optical drive. the only thing new is a 1 tb hdd and memory.
the motherboard and cpu are about 3 or 4 years old. the cpu is an AMD Fx8320 with an after market cooler and the motherboard is... well i forgot. the video card is my old EVGA gtx570.
i got it running overwatch at 70fps and on high settings :)

This is definitely something I'm interested in.
Do you think you could run "msinfo32", then export the system info to a text file with File->Export, then put it in a pastebin to share with us?

How were you able to mount a semi-modern mobo in a case from '01?

i had already moved the standoffs when i upgraded in 2007. what actually didn't fit was the cooler. it hit the case fan on the side panel. i had to remount the fan externally to gain enough clearance to close it up.

Bought a copy? I guess the deal really is limited to Win 7 and 8versions of
How much did it cost?

i couldn't even find 7 or 8 at the store. all they had in physical copies was 10. it was 70 bucks.

I only have that one one desktop. Cannot get it on my others until clients agree and install the Enterprise version of 10
So far 10 looks good to me. Did have to make a couple of changes in registry and damn how I hate doing that shit. Getting it to do Win 7 stuff they actually have hidden deep in files we cannot see but I did find the registry files all easy to locate LoL

i used to edit the registry to add functions to the right-click menu but those are all on the start button now. i like 10, i haven't felt compelled to mod it in any way yet.

Why would you buy Windows 10? Microsoft gives it away for free because they have a keylogger in it. You can set it to be disabled in privacy settings but it still keylogs.
Upgrade to GoboLinux.

because i wasn't upgrading from a previous version so it wasn't a free upgrade. and it was built for someone else and they use windows. also linux sucks cocks.
Anonymous I replied with this 9 years ago, 33 minutes later, 14 hours after the original post[^][v]#700,516
Well I'd say build a Hackintosh but Mac OS X is based on Linux.
GoboLinux also fixes most of the problems of Linux and it's not made by some white basement dweller. The creator is named Muhammad and he lives in Brazil.

Not for the Server side of the Net of Everything
Linux n UNIX which is almost as old as me - Rocks
I did give Linux a quick chance on one old laptop from days of IBM actually making ThinkPads
It does work but damn without MS stuff like a decent image viewer it SUCKED - Yea all kinds of alternate dis or dat to make Linux like MS machine - Just sucked

can it play games without using a resource eating windows emulator?

pretty much. i've had multiple linux distros installed and none of them have been truly comparable to windows. just drivers alone make using windows better unless you're running servers.

Elementary OS replaced Windows for me, best Linux system I've ever used

it's shit for gaming though. still needs wine to play most anything. except for a small number of major titles that have linux support, the rest are humble bundle indie shit games on steam or require wine and a lot of effort.
until linux is actually a suitable replacement for windows then i'll just use what works. and by that i mean what works best.
Anonymous J replied with this 9 years ago, 5 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^][v]#700,652
You gave the others a shot, you should give mine a shot. Emulate it and use it for one day for your non-gaming things and you'll agree with me that it's the best Linux ever.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
Anonymous J replied with this 9 years ago, 19 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^][v]#700,945
That's a really good point, actually. Please accept my apologies, I will try to remember to give credit to the GNU project when I talk about GNU/Linux. Thank you for the explanation!

How well does Linux's WINE work? A lot of old games have compatibility problems in newer versions of Windows. Maybe Linux's WINE will make it easier for them to work.
Syntax replied with this 9 years ago, 38 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^][v]#701,162
I looked this up for you because my English is just bad very bad
The Bad
Wine is a compromise and, as long as you understand this simple fact, you won't be surprised by the occasional clunky performance. The developers say that there shouldn't be any performance issues with Wine, but the truth is that you need a powerful computer to get some games and apps working. On Windows, the same app might have worked better with the same hardware configuration.
My experience with Linux is limited and I did try several popular packages to give it a try on one old IBM Thinkpad. I used Wine and then had glitches that required a reboot of the computer just like Windowns O/S. Then went to community forums on Linux to discover a huge and seems never ending list of Wine Bugs and fixes with the community working working on solving and all to make the computer look like its MS O/S
I love n adore UNIX work stations. Nor do I expect them to do Windows. Have been using UNIX for almost all my adult life time without disappointment. Linux may be almost as good? But I am betting NOT if its expected to provide a Windows clone.

I think WINE is potentially capable of doing pretty much whatever windows can, but you'll need access to the files from a Windows install to fill in the DLLs and stuff that can't be distributed. Most all of the errors I've encountered with WINE were fixed by retrieving the missing file from my windows partition. The only complaint I had is that if you don't already have a WINE-based program running, you may encounter lag when you try to launch one.

Can WINE play all those really old Windows of games that worked on Windows 98 and Windows XP but now don't work on recent versions of Windows?
I personally find I keep replaying old games from 15 years ago instead of new ones. Though I don't have that much time. I haven't even played Chrono Cross yet. I started it and played for a few hours, got bored and stopped but vowed to replay. Now I barely remember the game, though I still have an image of the keyboard control keys on my desktop all this time.

Probably, but like I said, there's a chance that you'll need to obtain additional system files (in your case, from a copy of XP).
