Leadsom dropped out of the Tory leadership contest earlier today, and Cameron has just said that May will be made PM on Wednesday afternoon, after he does his last Prime Minister's Questions.Although she's somewhat controversial, I believe the evidence shows that she's the most experienced and level-headed choice, and is best placed to get the UK the most favourable deal possible out of the Brexit.

May doesn't have to call one, no. And she has said she won't. Though an election in 2020 (I think) is mandatory.
I doubt that a general election now would do the country much good anyway, things are already unstable and uncertain after the Brexit. And the Tories would likely win it anyway, since the opposition party is too busy fighting itself to fight the Tories too.
Although, and I find this amusing, Labour is now calling for a general election. Really? Their MPs are actively trying to depose their leader, and their membership is deeply divided, and they want to go into a general election? That's very... Brave of them.

Why, are most countries required to hold an election if their current leader steps down? I was under the impression that another member of the governing party stepping in to take over from a retiring leader is the norm, in modern democracies.

I don't know about other countries but here when that happens, yeah there will be re-elections. But it's also a far more common thing here, for a cabinet to fall. All you need is a majority vote of parliament and your term is over. Fun fact we have had 6 cabinets actually finish their terms

Not here. The usual situation is that one party gets a majority and can govern alone, so parliament voting them out isn't a concern.
I think it's helpful to think of it this way. The UK voters, by a majority, elected a Conservative government in the last election. Theresa May, being a high-ranking Conservative, is simply carrying on the government that was elected by majority of UK voters.
Of course, the counter-argument is that the situation has changed majorly what with the Brexit, which could justify a fresh election. But, as I said, I don't think that an election would be too helpful right now.

Some countries have it so that you elect the party, not the prime minister. So if our prime minister stepped down or died, the party in power would choose another figure from inside its ranks.
I believe parliament could force an election, but iirc they wanted to do that during Harper's last term so he just shut down parliament

Yeah, it is technically the case that the UK general election elects a party rather than a leader. Constituencies elect individual MPs rather than a party leader themselves. Though obviously a party leader needs to win in their constituency too.
Of course, a leader getting their leadership validated with an election is still a big deal. And the party leaders are still a major influence on how people vote anyway.

Thoughts so far:
- Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary. Bloody hell.
- Sacked Gove (fantastic), kept Jeremy Hunt (not so fantastic), appointed Leadsom Environment Secretary (just lol).
- A Home Sec (Amber Rudd) who will have powers, under the Investigatory Powers Bill which is supported by May, to force service providers to 'disable' end-to-end encryption amongst other nasty stuff.
- Abolished the Department for Energy and Climate Change...

Boris as Foreign Secretary is a... Unique choice. Though I take some comfort in that other Ministers are handling the Brexit and international trade respectively. So if he does cock up, hopefully he won't do too much damage to current efforts.
On the whole, I figure I'll look on the bright side, for now. It seems a strong government for getting us through the Brexit okay, and May is at least pushing a socially liberal agenda too.

FYI, the responsibilities for energy and climate change have been folded into other departments.
I don't approve of the move either, but insinuating that the UK government no longer believes in climate change is a bit far.
